VAR spoils long awaited home opener for LA Galaxy

It was finally home sweet home for the Los Angeles Galaxy.

Having seen its original home opener, which was also to be its season-opener, at the Rose Bowl nonetheless, postponed due to inclement weather, the Galaxy finally got to play in front of its fans as they welcomed the Vancouver Whitecaps to Dignity Health Sports Park.

The night saw mixed results for the Galaxy. The Galaxy earned a point for a second straight match, as Kevin Leerdam canceled out Tristan Blackmon’s goal. However, two disallowed goals due to Video Review saw the night as two points dropped as far the Galaxy were concerned, and they were forced to settle for the 1-1 draw.

“Yeah, frustrating night, frustrating night,” Galaxy head coach Greg Vanney said. “There were definitely some good moments in the attack. We got in some good areas. We got to the endline several times.”

The Whitecaps grabbed the lead in the 14th minute with a little deception. Vancouver had a free kick from about 26 yards out, Ryan Gauld and Julian Gressel stood on top of the ball, Gauld then appeared to try to set the ball straight, but he pulled back and Gressel sent the free kick with his right foot into the penalty area and Blackmon’s header beat keeper Jonathan Bond far post.

The Galaxy were able to find an equalizer right before halftime. Dejan Joveljic received a ball from Efrain Alvarez, Joveljic then passed to Raheem Edwards, who then crossed into the six-yard box, keeper Yohei Takaoka dived and got his hands on the ball, but not enough to stop the play, and Leerdam came in and buried the shot to level the match.

“I don’t remember actually how the play went,” Leerdam said. “I was already in front of the defender and luckily the goalkeeper made a mistake and I was there to basically tap it in.”

However, it was two goals that were called back due to VAR that frustrated the Galaxy. The first cancelled goal came in the 28th minute, as Marky Delgado sprung Joveljic forward, and Joveljic crossed into the penalty area and Riqui Puig swooped in and buried the shot for what would have been an early equalizer. However, referee Victor Rivas soon got the call to the Video Review booth, and what was discovered was that Joveljic was offside when Marky Delgado sent the pass forward, and the goal was called back.

The second called-back goal was a little more debatable. It occured in the 77th minute, as Memo Rodriguez played Edwards forward, Edwards dribbled into the penalty area, played a pass that deflected off Whitecaps defenders Ranko Veselinovic and Blackmon, then to Joveljic, who brought the ball down and slotted the shot past Takaoka far post. However, another call to VAR was initiated, and was was up for debate was whether of not Joveljic chested the ball down, or brought it down with his right arm. The replay showed that the ball hit off Joveljic’s upper right arm near the chest area. Even as Jovelic pleaded with Rivas that the ball went off the chest, Rivas thought otherwise, and waived off the goal.

“I just don’t understand for the life of me how the referee, who is 25-yards behind the play, and directly behind the attacker, sees handball,” Vanney said. “Even when you watch it on replay, it’s not a handball. And you have all the angles in the world, potentially, in VAR. Let them make the call if it’s a handball. You’re guessing from 25-yards behind.”

The Galaxy are back on the road next weekend, as they travel to Portland to face the Timbers on Saturday for a nationally televised match.
