Super Copa and Campeon de Campeones Open the Liga MX Season

The Liga MX started in Carson, California on Sunday July 14th as the Campeon de Campeones and the Super Copa champions were decided.

This is an annual Liga MX event where the champion of the Apertura and the champion of the Clausura tournaments meet to decide who is the Campeon de Campeones (Champion of Champions). Also, the Apertura and Clausura Copa MX champions face off to decide who gets the Super Copa MX.

This year the Super Copa contender were Cruz Azul, who was the Copa MX Apertura champion, and Necaxa, who was taking America’s place (Las Aguilas won the Copa MX Clausura, but since they were playing for another championship, they had to give up its place) as they were the current Super Copa champions.

This first match of this Liga MX double header finished early since ‘La Maquina’ dominated the entire game and beat ‘Los Rayos’ 4-0. The match scorers for Cruz Azul were Milton Caraglio, Elias Hernandez, Edgar Mendez, and Juan Escobar. Good to mention, Necaxa is still suffering the transfer of Brian Fernandez to the Portland Timbers and Ruben Gonzalez to America. Since they left, Los Rayos had struggle at midfield and in offense and have not found good replacements for the now offensive leader of the Timbers and the Las Aguilas new player.

On the second match of the night America needed PKs to beat Tigres and become the Campeon de Campeones. The match had a lot of intensity and good football. Something unlikely as teams are coming from preseason and are still looking to get in their best shape.

America looked solid, especially in midfield. Tigres on the other hand played the same way they have since Ricardo ‘El Tuca’ Ferretti took over the Monterrey team, which is playing solid in the back lines and try to score on the counterattack.

Now America will face Atlanta United from the MLS in the Campeones Cup that will take place in Atlanta, GA on August 14th. This is the second year this tournament will take place. The current champion is Tigres, that beat Toronto last year 3-1.
