Gallery: San Jose Earthquakes 2- Portland Timbers 1

San Jose, CA- Win and you’re in. Sounds simple enough, right? Well apparently not so much. Despite facing a San Jose Earthquakes side that have lost two in a row the Portland Timbers were unable to punch their ticket to Major League Soccer’s second season on Saturday night. Despite a late goal from Sebastian Blanco to make things interesting the Timbers would go on to lose 2-1 to their Western Conference rivals at Avaya Stadium.

The Earthquakes would build a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Valeri Qazaishvili (16′) and Danny Hoesen (49′). While the result will not certainly set well with the Timbers (13-11-8, 47 points) for San Jose it was just what the doctor ordered. With the win the Quakes (12-14-6, 42 points) were able to keep up with Real Salt Lake (12-14-6, 42 points) on points for the sixth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. They are still going to need a little help down the stretch though as RSL have the edge in terms of Goal Differential (-6 to -22)
