Vancouver Whitecaps 1-1 UANL Tigres (Tigres advance 5-3 on penalties)

VANCOUVER, BC–The Vancouver Whitecaps were the last Canadian team in the Leagues Cup and they bowed out on penalties to UANL Tigres losing 5-3 on spot kicks following a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes. Tigres will now take on CF Monterrey in Houston on Tuesday (7pm, Apple TV) in the Round of 16.

The Whitecaps took the lead in the ninth minute as Ryan Gauld’s cross was only half cleared and went to Pedro Vite who would strike on the volley for the opening score. The Whitecaps preserved that lead eight minutes later with a goal line clearance from Ryan Raposo denying Tigres a sure goal.

The lead wouldn’t last, though, as in the 52nd minute, Andre-Pierre Gignac would equalize on a spectacular bicycle kick from eight yards out. As the game progressed, the Whitecaps appeared to be running out of gas, though Ryan White nearly scored with 15 minutes left. It would go to a penalty shootout at BC Place.

This time, the shootout would last 4.5 rounds as Ranko Vesilinovic of the Whitecaps would be the only one to have his spot kick saved by Nahuel Guzman while Tigres made all five of theirs to advance.

The Whitecaps next play on Sunday, August 20th at home against the San Jose Earthquakes. The Whitecaps currently hold the seventh position in the Western Conference, three points above the playoff line while the Quakes are one spot and one point above them. Kickoff is at 7:30pm PT on Apple TV.
