Utah Royals take their first loss in a fall to the Houston Dash

Sandy, U.T- The Houston Dash broke the Utah Royals winning streak and took a 2-1 win while on the road. Although the Royals scored the first goal and had a majority of the ball possession, the Royals fell as Dash forward Rachel Daly scored her first brace of the season.

The Royals maintained control of the ball, but the pace of the match started off slow as the home team navigated their way on the pitch against the Dash. In the 29’ minute, Royals forward Veronica Boquete (Vero) slipped the ball between the Dash defense to give Utah the break they needed.

Forward Amy Rodriguez was the receiver of Vero’s pass on the left side. Once Dash goalkeeper Jane Campbell came out of her box, Rodriguez shot to right of Campbell to score the 1-0 lead for Utah.

In the 42’ minute, Rachel Daly took her right-footed shot from the key that fell to the back of the net to tie the score 1-1. Three minutes of stoppage time were added to the clock before the half came to an end.

Minutes later Daly was back on the run and brought the ball down from a pass and crossed to the left side of the net to drill in the ball. Daly’s second goal broke the tie to give Houston a 2-1 lead.

The Dash had several opportunities on goal that looked hopeful. Forward Kealia Ohai took a shot with her left foot in the 54’ minute, but her shot was just outside of the net. While the Royals were looking to make a comeback, the Dash defense were quick to clear the ball from Utah’s plays.

The Dash were down a player as Daly was issued a red card in the 90’ minute for violent conduct and released from the field.

Houston’s 2-1 win gave them three points on the road, which puts the Dash in first place with 10 points. The Royals saw their first loss of the season and will be on the road for their next match as they face the North Carolina Courage.
