Houston Dynamo announced a new tv deal yesterday with Root Sports carrying their games, barring the nationally televised ones.

Though the partnership is just for one year, it is a huge opportunity for the Dynamo to grow their fan base in a much wider market area. ROOT Sports Southwest’s coverage area covers 4 million Houston homes as well as other parts of Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and even into New Mexico.

“We are pleased to partner with ROOT Sports and deliver our games into the homes of Dynamo fans throughout the region,” Dynamo president Chris Canetti said. “I’m confident that this partnership will be valuable to both the Dynamo and ROOT Sports in maximizing our future growth potential.”

Canetti also announced at Tuesday’s media day that they were close on closing a deal for a Spanish speaking television deal but did not specify which network that would be. Canetti did, however, confirm that it should be in place before the season’s opener at Columbus Crew on March 7th.

This may be more than useful given the addition of Mexican forward Erick Torres to their line up.

ROOT Sports Southwest also airs Rice University and University of Houston athletic programming as well as Mountain West, Big Sky, Conference USA programming and Texas high school football.

“Dynamo games are a great addition to our programming lineup,” said Murphy Brown, executive producer at ROOT Sports. “We are looking forward to providing passionate Dynamo fans extensive coverage of their favorite MLS team in 2015.”

ROOT Sports will broadcast the 2015 season opener on Saturday, March 7 when the Dynamo open their tenth season against Columbus Crew SC at BBVA Compass Stadium at 7:30 p.m.
