Revolution dismantle Inter Miami with 3-1 victory

FOXBOROUGH, MA–The New England Revolution (8-6-3, 30 pts.) were victorious in a 3-1 match versus Inter Miami CF (5-0-12, 15 pts.) in an MLS Match on Saturday, June 10th.

The match kicked off at 7:30 p.m. ET at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, MA to a crowd of 36,235.

The team started their lineup in a 3-5-2 formation with Đorđe Petrović starting in net with a backline of Dave Romney, Christian Makoun and Andrew Farrell at the center back positions. The defensive midfield consisted of Matt Polster (left midfield), Latif Blessing (right midfield). Captain Carles Gil played ahead of them in the central role. The winger/wingback roles were manned by Emmanuel Boateng (left), and DeJuan Jones (right). The striker duo was Bobby Wood (left) and Gustavo Bou (right).

Designated Player Giacomo Vrioni remains starting on the bench for the third week in a row.

Designated Player Gustavo Bou starts his first match since April 8th. He appeared in two substitute appearances since then.

Midfielder Noel Buck missed today’s match due to the to the muscle strain in his left leg that he received in training last week.

Defender Brandon Bye remains out due to his left shoulder injury sustained last time the Revolution played Inter Miami on May 13th.

The match kicked off with Inter Miami starting from the center circle. #14 Corentin Jean took the kickoff and played the ball directly backward to goalkeeper #1 Drake Callender. The goalkeeper then launched the ball up the center of the field directly to the Revolution which was quickly won in a 50-50 duel.

Inter Miami had the first chance of the match less than 50 seconds in, when #32 Noah Allen played it into to #10 Josef Martinez. His long range left-footed effort went just wide of the left post.

New England’s first chance of the match came just 6 minutes later when Carles Gil’s corner kick went straight through the area. Defender Andrew Farrell managed to sprint out to the wing to get the ball to set up Gustavo Bou for a shot that went just wide of the left post.

Minutes later, #14 Corentin Jean took a shot from the right flank that was easily saved by Revolution goalkeeper Đorđe Petrović.

In the 25th minute, New England was granted a Penalty Kick.

Following a through ball from Carles Gil, midfielder Matt Polster took a touch atop the penalty area and was fouled by Inter Miami defender #2 DeAndre Yedlin. The decision was straight away called for a penalty kick.

Seconds later, midfielder Carles Gil slotted away the goal for his 6th goal of the year.

Less than 10 minutes later, New England doubled their advantage.

Following a long stoppage for an Inter Miami injury, the Revolution took the ensuing corner kick. Midfielder Carles Gil delivered the ball into the area and found an unmarked Matt Polster, who scored the header.

His celebration, placing the ball under his shirt and kissing it, pays homage to himself and his wife, as they are expecting their second child later this year.

In the closing minutes of the second half, Inter Miami had yet another chance as #30 Benjamin Cremaschi combined with #22 Nicolás Stefanelli. Stefanelli’s return pass led to a volley by Cremaschi which was straight at Đorđe Petrović.

Following the save, the match entered halftime with New England leading 2-0.

The second half began with Bobby Wood starting from the midfield center circle. He sent the ball backwards to defender Dave Romney, who then combined with Christian Makoun, and then Andrew Farrell, before starting the ensuing attack.

Less than 5 minutes into the second half, New England added to their lead once again.

After receiving the ball on the left flank, midfielder Carles Gil sent a left-footed long ball through towards forwards Gustavo Bou and Bobby Wood. After getting to the ball first, Bobby Wood did a Cruyff turn to get past Inter Miami defender #4 Christopher McVey, and then slotted his right footed shot near post past #1 Drake Callender for his 6th goal of the season.

This is the most goals he has had in a single MLS season.

In the 62nd minute, New England continued their attacking threat after a pass from Carles Gil to Gustavo Bou was blocked early on. The ball quickly found Latif Blessing wide open in the box and he sent his shot directly over the cross bar.

In the 64th minute, Head Coach Bruce Arena made his first two changes of the match by substituting forwards Bobby Wood and Gustavo Bou for forwards Giacomo Vrioni and Esmir Bajraktarević.

Three minutes later, in the 67th minute, Midfielder Latif Blessing entered the referee’s booklet with a yellow card for a challenge on #17 Josef Martinez.

Three minutes later from that challenge, in the 70thminute, Inter Miami midfielder #41 David Ruiz entered the referee’s booklets with a yellow card for a challenge on Andrew Farrell, and defender #2 DeAndre Yedlin complaining about the call and bumping the official.

In the 71st minute, Head Coach Bruce Arena made his third of the match by substituting midfielder Latif Blessing for Jack Panayotou

Five minutes later in the 76th minute, Inter Miami defender #32 Noah Allen was issued a yellow card for a foul on Esmir Bajraktarević.

Entering the 81st minute, Inter Miami was granted a penalty kick. After a through ball was played in by defender #27 Sergii Kryvstov. He found #2 DeAndre Yedlin. He then flicked the ball up with his right foot to attempt to find #9 Leo Campana. He never got to the ball as Revolution defender Andrew Farrell ATTEMPTED a bicycle kick clearance, completely missing the ball, and striking Campana up high on the shoulder.

Due to the tackle, Andrew Farrell was given a yellow card for the tackle.

Josef Martinez stepped up to take the kick and slotted the ball in the bottom right corner after sending Đorđe Petrović the wrong way. This goal moves Martinez past Revolution legend Taylor Twellman for 10th place on the all-time MLS goal scoring list with his 102nd MLS goal.

Minutes later, in the 85th minute, Inter Miami had yet another chance as #16 Robert Taylor unleashed a fantastic right-footed shot that was saved by a diving Đorđe Petrović.

Following this effort, the match ended after 90+5 minutes, with the Revolution winning 3-1.

With tonight’s result, the New England Revolution remain in fourth place in the Eastern Conference with an 8-6-3, 30-point record. They currently trail the Philadelphia Union (30 points), Nashville SC (32 points), and FC Cincinnati (40 points).

Along with the result, defender DeJuan Jones surpassed 10,000 career MLS minutes.

Midfielder Carles Gil also reached 80 career goal contributions. With this, Carles became the fifth player in club history to reach 80 career combined goals & assists. The others to accomplish the feat are Taylor Twellman, Steve Ralston, Lee Nguyen & Diego Fagúndez.

The New England Revolution (8-6-3, 30 pts.) remain in Foxborough, MA to face Orlando City SC (7-5-4, 26 pts.) in an MLS Match on Saturday, June 17th. The match kicks off at 7:30 p.m. ET on MLS Season Pass on the Apple TV app.
