Paul McDonough reveals Inter Miami will add three more players to roster

Inter Miami will sign three more players as sporting director Paul McDonough continues to build the club’s roster for its inaugural season.

The Herons still have a designated player spot open after the signings of Rodolfo Pizarro and Matias Pellegrini during the summer, and McDonough has confirmed they will fill that spot with an attacker.

The former Atlanta United and Orlando City chief also says Inter will use TAM to bring in a number 8, and having moved to top of the allocation list, another winger or forward could come through the doors at Lockhart Stadium.

Speaking on MLS Extra Time, McDonough said: “I did leave room to add players and I wanted to add players.

“The pandemic came and the biggest problem for me is trying to figure out when the league is really going to allow us to have players.

“I have got roster space and cap flexibility. I want to add players before we play in Orlando but I don’t know if they are going to let that happen.

“If I have got the money and I’ve got space, I want the freedom to be able to use that, but if they don’t let that happen, we will compete in the tournament and then we will look to add players after the tournament.

“I think we will add three significant pieces. We are number one in the allocation ranking now. We will definitely use that.

“We will add a DP and still another TAM level player. The DP will be an attacking player, definitely.

“I have always said I wanted to get a TAM 8 and the third player by allocation – it gives a lot of flexibility with the guys on the allocation list.

“We could go with an attacking player or somebody wide.”

Inter Miami lost its first two games of the MLS season but Diego Alonso’s men will get their chance to pick up their first win when they return to action in the MLS is Back tournament.

Inter have been drawn in Group A with state rivals and competition hosts Orlando City, kicking off the season against them on July 8.

Although part of a six-team group with NYCFC and Nashville also included, Miami will then face Philadelphia Union and Chicago Fire in its remaining group stage matchups.
