Vancouver Whitecaps 0-Atlanta United FC 1

To say that the early part of Atlanta United FC’s 2019 season has been a disappointment would be an understatement. Some poor results, new faces, and last seasons title hanging over them has created a very tough set of circumstances for the side and their supporters. But their results have improved as of late and with that a little bit of luck has come as well. Thanks to an early goal and some stellar defending Atlanta kept up their winning ways in Vancouver Wednesday night defeating the Whitecaps 1-0.

The turning point in the match came in the 19th minute when a surging Josef Martinez was taken down in the box by Whitecaps defender Lass Bangoura. Martinez walked up to the spot and buried his goal into the back of the net, his fifth goal of the season. Goalkeeper Brad Guzan had a relatively quiet evening, making two stops to earn his fifth consecutive clean sheet. Credit to defenders Florentin Pogba and Franco Escobar for playing a deep line which in turn prevented the Caps from getting shots at the top of the box.

With the win Atlanta (6-3-2, 20 points) earned their fifth consecutive victory and moved into third place in the Eastern Conference. Their road swing continues on Sunday when they travel to Red Bull Arena to take on New York (5pm EST, FS1).

As for Vancouver (3-6-3, 12 points) the loss snaps their three game undefeated run. They will need to regroup quickly as they head on the road to take on Sporting Kansas City on Saturday (8:30PM EST TSN1/ESPN+).
