Houston Dynamo 2-Guastatoya 1

Dynamo advance 3-1 on aggregate

Guatemalan champion Guastatoya came in to Houston to try to score a goal which will give them life and a real chance to pass over the US Open Cup champions. Even though ‘El Pecho Amarillo’ (the yellow chest) showed character, bravery, and even some good futbol for some time, Houston showed they were the better and more experienced team.

After the 1-0 victory last week in Guatemala City, all the Dynamo needed was a tie to advance. However, the away goal factor was something they needed to be careful because it could affect them at the end.

The match was played after a severe thunderstorm in southeast Texas, which delayed the kick off time over two hours. The Dynamo needed Alberth Elis and Mauro Manotas, who started on the bench, to rescue the team who was not able – at the time – to seal their spot in the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Champions League.

All that because Guastatoya scored first in the game. The club’s first international goal was scored by Costa Rican Aaron Navarro, who took advantage of a great pass inside the box to tie the score 1-1 in the aggregate at the 72’. However, Mauro Manotas, scored a brace to give the victory to the Dynamo 2-1 in the match and the 3-1 in the aggregate.

This was a very complicated match for the MLS team who struggled to beat a fighting Guasta, who had chances to score but were not good enough to capitalize those opportunities.

Now, Houston will face one of the tournament favorites in Liga MX Tigres. The first match will be played in the Space City on March 5th whereas the second leg will be played at Estadio Universitario in the city of Monterrey on Wednesday 13th.
