Diego Alonso focused on what Inter Miami ‘can become’ after LAFC defeat

Inter Miami head coach Diego Alonso is seeing the positives from his team’s opening day defeat to LAFC.

Miami lost its inaugural MLS outing despite putting in an encouraging performance at the Banc of California Stadium, losing just 1-0 to the reigning Supporters’ Shield winners.

Inter actually had chances of their own to draw or even win the game, but Carlos Vela’s moment of inspiration saw LAFC get its season off to a winning start.

It was a hustoric day for Inter Miami, but the performance brought nothing but encouragement from all connected to the Herons, including head coach Alonso.

“We had several very clear chances to get ahead on the scoreboard. It was the same after going 1-0 down as we pushed to get an equalizer,” he said.

“I’ll stay with that. With the heart the team showed. Surely we have to improve in football, but with this heart and with this intensity with which the team plays, we will surely win many games.”

He added: “Against maybe the best team in the league we gave a tremendous picture today of what we can become.

“With only six weeks of work, the merit is certainly from the footballers for what we have done today and the work they have done.”

Inter are next in action against DC United away from home on Saturday before their long-awaited home opener against LA Galaxy the following week.
