Angel City draws, but still laments dropped points against Racing Louisville

It was another case of good news, bad news for Angel City following its trip to Kentucky to face Racing Louisville.

The good news that it extended its unbeaten streak to seven matches following its 1-1 draw in Louisville, and at this point of the season, every point is valuable in its quest to make the playoffs.

However, Angel City certainly saw the evening as two points dropped, as they allowed a late equalizer by Kristen Davis, which canceled out Katie Johnson’s opening goal. The result not only resulted in points dropped for Angel City, who are in 10th place in the league standings, but it also saw them miss out on a chance to jump us as many as three points had they held on for the win.

“Conceding a goal late in the game is really disappointing,” Angel City head coach Becki Tweed said. “We came here for three points and we got away with one, which we’re not happy with. The game was pretty even across the board, but obviously opportunities to win the game in this league are super close in all moments.”

Angel City took the lead in the 67th minute. Scarlett Camberos dribbled down the left side of the field, played a ball to Savannah McCaskill inside the penalty area, McCaskill then found Johnson near the top of the six-yard box, and Johnson blasted a point-blank shot past keeper Katie Lund to stake Angel City to the lead. Louisville however found and equalizer in the 79th minute, as Maddie Pokorny crossed from the left side into the penalty area and Davis headed a ball past keeper Didi Haracic near post to level the match.

“Scarlett won the ball down the line and drove it down the line, which she’s really good at,” Johnson said of the play leading up to the goal. “Savannah [McCaskill] is great at pulling and getting into the attack as a 10. She got on the ball and played me early. I actually took a step too far, but it opened up a window for me, and I was able to find the upper corner.”

Angel City returns home on Sunday to face OL Reign.
