Red Stars Lose Their Own Way against Angel City

Chicago Red Stars 0-1 Angel City FC

BRIDGEVIEW, IL—A few years ago, the Red Stars were beneficiaries of own goals that led to points. On this night, though, an own goal was the difference in the Red Stars losing to Angel City FC, 1-0.

The Red Stars were playing without Mallory Swanson who was a question mark with a hip injury. They could well have needed her on this night to break down the Angel City defense.

Alyssa Naeher was keeping her defense in the match for the most part and Tatumn Milazzo almost scored an own goal of her own after a shot deflected off her, but Milazzo would clear it off the line in the 32nd minute. Eight minutes later, the Red Stars would not be so fortunate. A free kick into the box went off Maxi Rall and into the net for what would be the game’s only goal. It is the second straight match that the Red Stars were victims of an own goal. This time, there would be no reply unlike in Orlando, two weeks ago.

The closest the Red Stars got to scoring came in the 55th minute when Ally Schlegel’s header went off the crossbar. The second half was more energetic than the first from the Red Stars and that was a pain point for head coach Lorne Donaldson.

“I make it short. First off, we didn’t show up,” said Donaldson. “Even though we didn’t show up, there was a few opportunities. That happens. You ]switch some stuff up and switch players. I didn’t think we got the tactics right myself as a coach, so we didn’t show up. Second half was a lot different game.”

The Red Stars travel to Seattle to take on the Reign at Lumen Field on Sunday, April 21st with a 5pm CT kickoff on NWSL+ and Marquee.
