Revolution suffer back-to-back losses as they lose 3-2 versus Orlando City

FOXBOROUGH, MA– The New England Revolution (14-10-8, 52 pts.) were defeated 3-2 versus Orlando City SC (17-9-7, 60pts.) in a match on Saturday night.

The match kicked off at 7:30 p.m. ET at Exploria Stadium in Orlando, Florida to a crowd of 24,440.

The team started their lineup in a 4-2-3-1 formation with Earl Edwards Jr. starting in net with a backline of (left back) Matt Polster, (center backs) Dave Romney, and Omar Gonzalez, along with (right back) DeJuan Jones. The defensive midfield spots were manned by Mark-Anthony Kaye (left), Noel Buck (right), The midfield roles were manned by Tomás Chancalay (left), Emmanuel Boating (right wing), and Carles Gil (center) in the attacking midfield role. Giacomo Vrioni started the match as the lone striker.

Midfielder Ian Harkes remains unavailable due to a fractured his Adam’s Apple. His timetable is unknown.

Defender Andrew Farrell is out tonight with an apparent right leg injury.

Revolution goalkeeper Tomáš Vaclík makes the matchday roster for the first time.

Defender Henry Kessler returns to the matchday roster for the first time since April 8th. He last played versus CF Montreal, where he left with a right-hamstring injury that later required surgery and sidelined him for 5 months.

Defender Ryan Spaulding also made the bench. He last appeared in early September.

The match kicked off with New England starting from the center circle. Forward Giacomo Vrioni played the ball to defender Matt Polster, who elected to build out of the back to start the match.

Orlando’s first chance came in the 4th minute when #10 Mauricio Pereyra’s shot was blocked and #3 Rafael Santos’ shot went over the cross bar.

New England’s first chance came in the 21st minute when Carles Gil’s long-range effort just went over the crossbar.

One of New England’s best chances of the match came in the 22nd minute when Earl Edwards Jr.’s goal kick found Nacho Gil. He took 2 touches before square passing the ball to Tomás Chancalay, who unleashed a shot that struck the crossbar.

In the 30th minute, Orlando took the early lead.

Midfielder #10 Mauricio Pereyra played it wide to #23 Dagur Thórhallsson, who then sent a right footed delivery for find #13 Duncan Maguire for the header. This is Maguire’s 11th goal this season.

Just 7 minutes later, Orlando added to their lead once more.

Midfielder #10 played the ball left to find #16 Wilder Cartagena, who avoided a slide tackle from Nacho Gil. He found #3 Rafael Santos who found #77 Iván Angulo who elected for the one time cross to find #17 Facundo Torres for the half-volley. The ball went straight past Earl Edwards Jr. This is Torres’ 14th goal this season.

Entering the 42nd minute, New England pulled one back.

Midfielder Carles Gil took the ball in the midfield and took a long-distance low driven left-footed shot that was muffed by Orlando City goalkeeper #1 Pedro Gallese into his own net. This is Gil’s 10th goal this season.

Just moments after New England’s goal, Orlando added to their lead.

Midfielder #10 Mauricio Pereyra found #3 Rafael Santos who slid the ball for #77 Iván Angulo for the wide-open shot that was deflected past Earl Edwards Jr. This is Angulo’s 5th goal this season.

After the 45+2 minutes, the match entered halftime with Orlando ahead 3-1.

Entering the second half, Revolution head coach Clint Peay made his first three changes of the match by substituting midfielders Nacho Gil & Noel Buck along with forward Giacomo Vrioni for defender Henry Kessler, midfielder Emmanuel Boateng, and forward Gustavo Bou.

The second half kicked off with Orlando City starting from the center circle. #13 Duncan Maguire played the ball backwards to #10 Mauricio Pereyra, who elected to build out of the back for Orlando.

Orlando’s first chance of the half came in the 49th minute when Orlando City midfielder #16 Wilder Cartagena’s long-range effort was tipped over the bar by Earl Edwards Jr.

New England’s first chance of the half came when Emmanuel Boateng’s low-driven cross found Carles Gil in the six-yard box, but Gil’s close-range effort was met by a stellar save from #1 Pedro Gallese.

In the 62nd minute, Revolution head coach Clint Peay made his fourth change of the match by substituting midfielder Mark-Anthony Kaye for midfielder Tommy McNamara.

In the 82nd minute, Revolution head coach Clint Peay made his fifth and final change of the match by substituting midfielder Matt Polster for midfielder Christian Makoun.

In the 84th minute, Revolution midfielder Tommy McNamara was issued a yellow card for a foul on Orlando City midfielder #5 César Araújo.

Entering the 92nd minute, New England grabbed one back.

Midfielder Emmanuel Boateng crossed the ball into the box, and it trickled outside of the box to find DeJuan Jones. He passed it to Carles Gil, who elected for another long-range shot, that was met with a deflection from #6 Robin Jansson and into the net for Gil’s 11th goal of the season.

After the 90+3 minutes, the match ended with Orlando City holding on for the 3-2 victory over New England.

The New England Revolution (14-10-8, 52 pts.) head out to Nashville, Tennessee to face Nashville SC (12-10-10, 46 pts.) in an MLS Match on Saturday, October 15th. The match kicks off at Geodis Park at 7:30 p.m. ET on MLS Season Pass on the Apple TV app.
