Giacomo Vrioni’s lone goal leads New England to 1-0 victory over New York Red Bulls

The New England Revolution (13-7-5, 46 pts.) were victorious 1-0 in an MLS match versus New York Red Bulls (7-8-11, 29 pts.) on Wednesday night.

The match kicked off at 7:30 p.m. ET at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts to a crowd of 00,000.

The team started their lineup in a 4-3-3 formation with Earl Edwards Jr. starting in net with a backline of (left back) Ben Sweat, (center backs) Dave Romney, and Omar Gonzalez, along with (right back) Matt Polster. The midfield spots were manned by Ian Harkes (left midfield), Mark-Anthony Kaye (right midfield), and Carles Gil (central attacking midfield). The forward roles were manned by Tomás Chancalay (left wing), Nacho Gil (right wing), and Giacomo Vrioni as the lone striker.

Defender Andrew Farrell returned from a leg injury and was available on the bench for today’s match.

Forward Gustavo Bou and defender DeJuan Jones missed today’s match due to leg injuries.

Goalkeeper Jacob Jackson and defender Ryan Spaulding missed today’s match due to head injuries.

Due to the injury to Jacob Jackson, the Revolution signed Revolution II goalkeepe

The match began with New York Red Bulls starting from the center circle. #74 Tom Barlow played the ball backwards to goalkeeper #1 Carlos Coronel who launched it up the field for a contested 50/50 ball.

The first moment of the match came in the 15th minute when Revolution midfielder Carles Gil’s keft-footed shot was saved by #1 Carlos Coronel when diving to his right.

Less than 7 minutes later, Revolution defender Matt Polster struck the crossbar after receiving a cut-back pass from forward Tomás Chancalay.

Entering 30th minute, the Revolution took the 1-0 lead.

Revolution midfielder Nacho Gil managed to find midfielder Mark-Anthony Kaye who sent a through-ball in behind to find forward Giacomo Vrioni on the left flank. Vrioni took 3 touches before unleashing a low-driven left footed shot into the bottom right corner past Red Bulls goalkeeper #1 Carlos Coronel.

In the 39th minute, Revolution midfielder Nacho Gil was issued a yellow card for a foul on Red Bull midfielder #82 Luquinhas.

Just 2 minutes later, Revolution goalkeeper Earl Edwards Jr. was called upon to make a save off of a shot by Red Bull midfielder #82 Luquinhas.

After the 45+1 minutes, the match entered halftime with the Revolution leading 1-0.

The second half began with New England starting from the center circle. Forward Giacomo Vrioni played the ball backwards to defender Omar Gonzalez, who elected to launch the ball forward up the right flank.

In the 48th minute, Revolution midfielder Ian Harkes’ right footed shot was shakily saved by #1 Carlos Coronel and went out for a corner kick.

In the 62nd minute, Giacomo Vrioni continued the Revolution’s attacking threat by having a long-distance effort that was easily saved by #1 Carlos Coronel.

Entering the 66th minute, Revolution head coach Richie Williams made three substitutions by replacing forwards Giacomo Vrioni, Tomás Chancalay and midfielder Nacho Gil and replaced them with forwards Bobby Wood, Emmanuel Boateng, and midfielder Noel Buck.

In the 67th minute, New York Red Bulls midfielder #8 Frankie Amaya was issued a yellow card for a foul on Revolution midfielder Carles Gil.

In the 74th minute, Revolution defender Matt Polster was issued a yellow card for a foul on Red Bull midfielder #82 Luquinhas.

As the match entered the 86th minute, Revolution midfielder Noel Buck unleashed a volley that was met by a quick save by #1 Carlos Coronel.

Red Bulls best chance of the second half came in the 88th minute when midfielder #19 Wikelman Carmona’s left-footed freekick was met with a catch save by Earl Edwards Jr.

After the 90+3 minutes, New England held on to the 1-0 lead.

With the victory, the Revolution extended their unbeaten streak at home to 13 games (10-0-3).

In regard to historic marks, Revolution defender Omar Gonzalez started in his 250th career MLS Match.

The New England Revolution (13-7-5, 46 pts.) remain at home in Foxborough, Massachusetts to face the Austin FC (9-5-12, 32 pts.) in an MLS Match on Saturday, September 2nd. The match kicks off in Gillette Stadium at 7:30 p.m. ET on MLS Season Pass on the Apple TV app.
