Niezgoda breaks scoreless drought, Timbers and Red Bulls share spoils

Jaroslaw Niezgoda broke the Portland Timbers’ scoring drought in the 53rd minute, thanks to an opportune and on-target pass from midfielder Santiago Moreno to put them ahead briefly.

It was 335 minutes without a goal for the Timbers until that opportune play when Niezgoda’s score broke that not-so-dignified streak, as well as scoring his third goal of the season.

For the Red Bulls playing at home, it hasn’t been too successful compared to their record on the road. But still, they delivered a wondrous match in both halves, and persistence paid off for them in the end.

David Bingham started in goal for the Timbers ahead of regular starter Alajz Ivacic. The Timbers’ substitute keeper had his moments in the match with a one-of-a-kind save in the 43rd minute from a shot sent by the Red Bulls’ Tim Barlow.

The Timbers almost went ahead early when Santiago Moreno sent a shot that hit the post in 24th minute after a nice pass from Niezgoda. Justin Rasmussen missed scoring his first professional goal by a Red Bull defender deflection.

Niezgoda finally broke the deadlock, but the Timbers couldn’t hold on the lead. Aaron Long equalized off a corner kick in the 67th minute.

So far, in this 2022 season, Jaroslaw Niezgoda has scored on the road as well as tied for the team lead with Yimmi Chara with three goals each. As for Yimmi Chara, the Colombian and younger of the Chara clan has started in all eleven matches of this 2022 and is the only Timbers player to do so.
