Seattle Sounders 1- Minnesota United FC 0

It wasn’t pretty but in the end the Seattle Sounders got exactly what they needed on Decision Day. Despite facing one of the hottest teams in Major League Soccer in Minnesota United FC the Sounders pulled off a big three points, edging the Loons 1-0 to earn the number two playoff seed in the Western Conference.

The Sounders took the lead midway through the first half with Roman Torres heading home the game’s only goal in the 28th minute. His goal came off of a cross into the box by Joevin Jones whose high swerving ball found the Panamanian international at the far post. The goal was Torres’ first of the season and first-ever goal in Major League Soccer.

Seattle faced minimal pressure from Minnesota for the final hour, with Gustav Svensson doing an expert job at stifling the Loon’s midfield passing. Sounders goalkeeper Stefan Frei had a relatively quiet day, making one save. Ethan Finlay had their best chance in the 40th minute, breaking past Seattle’s backline and hammering a shot off of the bar.

With the win Seattle (16-10-8, 56 points) claimed second place in the Western Conference ahead of the MLS Cup Playoffs. They will face FC Dallas in their opening round match at CenturyLink Field on October 19th.

As for Minnesota (15-11-8, 53 points) while the loss certainly put a damper on their season it didn’t diminish what a tremendous campaign it has been for the side. The Loons finished with their first-ever playoff appearance and their most wins in team history. They will also get a home game in the first round against an interesting foe: the Los Angeles Galaxy (October 20, Allianz Field).
