After getting crushed in their MLS debut in Portland, Minnesota United will play its first home match against fellow expansion side Atlanta United Saturday at TCF Bank Stadium. To say the Loons had a disappointing season opener is a little unfair. The Timbers will most likely finish in the Top 3 of the Western Conference and most certainly compete for the Supporters Shield. Though the final score ended up being lopsided (5-1, Portland), United continues to build each week.
After last week the Loons have a lot to build on. In the 78th minute Christian Ramirez cut Portland’s lead in half 2-1 before the Timbers went scoring spree in the last 12 minutes. United’s attack was on par, putting up 11 shots, though only 2 were on target. Defense will be a big question, as Atlanta comes into this match with an electrifying attack lead by Josef Martinez.
Last week against New York Redbulls fell behind 1-0 in the first half before surging back to win the match 2-1. Minnesota will need to put together a full game on both sides of the ball if they hope to come away with three points. The back four struggled against Portland especially on the after losing falling behind, and mental mistakes must be kept at a minimal. Centerback Vadim Demidov will need to anchor down the back line and step up as the leader of a defense that still has a lot of question marks.
Big questions for this weekend. Can the Loons keep up with a high powered Atlanta attack currently firing on all cylinders early in the season? Will Heath make the move to start Christian Ramirez after scoring the sides only goal last week?
