Super Cup Final (Trondheim, 9 August 2016)

On a wet and windy summer’s day in Trondheim in northern Norway, Real Madrid
(Champions League winners) faced fellow Spanish side Sevilla (Europa League
winner) in the UEFA Super Cup Final.

The sight of a deserted Sevilla fan zone in the town centre was testament to
the unfavourable conditions, which the small number of Spanish fans who made
the trip were obviously not accustomed to.

A disappointing Fanzone in Trondheim

Just like last year, the Super Cup Final was another exciting match – it seems that without the pressures that go with other more significant
tournaments such as the Champions League, the players are able to relax more
and the entertainment value increases. Both teams played attractive
attacking football and there was the excitement of last minute goals for
Real Madrid at the end of normal time and at the end of extra time which saw
them lift the trophy after winning the match 3-2.

The entertainment flowed through into the press conference at the end of the
match. The usual formal atmosphere was suddenly interrupted when the Real
Madrid players burst through into the room singing and dancing and proceeded
to drench their manager (Zinedine Zidane) and captain (Sergio Ramos) who
were being quizzed by the media at the time. It was a good sign of the
relaxed nature of the event but also showed a very strong team spirit
amongst the Real Madrid players.
