Orlando City Soccer Club today announced it has named midfielder and 2007 FIFA World Player of the Year Kaká the team captain as the Lions prepare for the start of their inaugural Major League Soccer (MLS) season.

The Club opens MLS play against fellow newcomers New York City FC Sunday, March 8, 2015 at 5:00 p.m. ET at the Orlando Citrus Bowl.

“Kaká has demonstrated great leadership both on the field and in the locker room since the start, and the other players have naturally looked to his guidance throughout preseason so he was the natural pick to skipper the club,” said Head Coach Adrian Heath. “Ricky’s role will extend off the pitch as well, serving as the team’s liaison with the front office and coaching staff on all player-related concerns to ensure we provide the best possible environment for the players to train, develop and succeed personally and professionally.”

Orlando City will host several events leading up to March 8 as part of Operation #FillTheBowl.  Admission to many of these events includes a ticket to the historic first game.
