Three takeaways from Sky Blue’s 1-0 loss to Boston

The Boston Breakers defeated Sky Blue F.C. by a final score of 1-0 on Sunday afternoon in Boston. Natasha Dowie scored what would prove to be the decisive goal of the game in the first half. Boston picked up its first win of the season and first ever victory over Sky Blue F.C.

Here are three quick takeaways from the Sky Blue vs. Boston Breakers game on Sunday.

Boston Breakers made no mistake with 2017 NWSL No. 1 draft pick Rose Lavelle

Boston rookie Rose Lavelle takes possession.

Rose Lavelle logged her first career assist after a perfectly weighted ball to Dowie led to the opening goal of the game. Lavelle recently burst onto the United States Women’s National team stage after showing her impressive quality against Russia in early April.

Lavelle has shown good vision and quick pace in the midfield for both the USWNT and the Breakers on Sunday. Expect to hear more from the Boston youngster this season in the NWSL.

Although unable to find the back of the net, Sky Blue created several scoring chances

Sky Blue’s Kelley O’Hara moves in to stop the attack.

After the first two games of the season, Sky Blue F.C. was only able to score once off a Sarah Killion penalty kick in Seattle. However, there shouldn’t be concern from Sky Blue F.C. head coach Christy Holly just yet. Sky Blue was able to create several chances both in Seattle and today in Boston.

The most impressive build up came in the 23rd minute after Kelley O’Hara started an attack, finding teammate Taylor Lytle in the midfield. Lytle slipped a ball outside to a streaking Leah Galton, who hit a perfect cross back to the head of O’Hara. Boston keeper Abby Smith made the impressive save from O’Hara to keep the game scoreless.

Sky Blue should be happy for next week’s home opener

After a cross-country trip to Seattle last week for the season opener, and the trip to Boston today, Sky Blue F.C. will have its home opener this coming Sunday against Kansas City.

It will be interesting to see if Holly sticks with the same lineup and formation for the home opener. That will also depend on the health of Leah Galton, who left today’s game in the second half with an injury. If Galton can’t go next Sunday we will likely see New Jersey native Daphne Corboz inserted into the starting lineup. Corboz has been the first off the bench for Holly in the first two games this year.
