U.S. Open Cup Semifinals

Allianz Field, Saint Paul, Minnesota

In a four day span the Portland Timbers and Minnesota United will face off again and this time in the semifinals of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

With Sunday’s game in the books, after the Loons won it after the referee called on Larry’s Mabiala for a handball inside the area using VAR, that awarded a penalty kick converted by Loons Ethan Finley on stoppage time.

On a win that uplifts Minnesota spirit and momentum coming to this match, looking to seize an important win in their time in MLS, with a pass into their first ever USOC finals.

Contrary to the Portland Timbers looking for a charm in their second time playing in the semifinals and advancing into their first ever Open Cup finals.

That translates for Giovanni Savarese, hard work paying off and taking the team to its first final and with the opportunity of winning his first trophy.

So far, in a span of fifteen days the Portland Timbers, playing in five matches, a win will be an uplift to their spirits and efforts.

As a loss before their Vancouver game, will be taken as a total disappointment.

For this match both squads are readying to put on their best starting elevens, this time the Minnesota side will have in its lineup one of their top scorer and play-maker Darwin Quintero.

As the Loons DP was absent from Sunday’s match, to a suspension.

The question will arise for the Rose City manager of who he will put on the field for this upcoming Wednesday’s match, if he gambles again with his top formation or make some changes.

This match for both teams a win will be crucial as the Portland Timbers second time in the semifinals as for Minnesota their first and for sure this game will be labeled as one amazing contest.

In the end, I do not see any of these two squads as favorites to win this match, but for sure every minute will be fought and played like a final.

As these Timbers can play one amazing game of football at home and especially on the road.
