Team goal finished off by Dylan Borrero leads to first win of 2023

FOXBOROUGH, MA– The New England Revolution entered the win column in 2023, following the team’s 1-0 victory versus Nashville SC in their third preseason match in St. Petersburg, FL.

The match that took place at Al Lang Stadium (home of USL Championship side Tampa Bay Rowdies) kicked off at 1:00 p.m. and featured a strong New England Revolution squad that lined up in a 4-2-3-1 formation. This starting 11 featured goalkeeper Đorđe Petrović and had center-back Dave Romney (left) and Henry Kessler (right) taking charge in the middle. The outside-back positions were manned by Christian Makoun (left) and Brandon Bye (right). The defensive midfield positions were manned by Latif Blessing alongside Matt Polster. In the attacking midfield, the team went with captain Carles Gil in the central attacking position with Dylan Borrero (left) and Jack Panayotou (right). Striker Jozy Altidore started the match as the lone striker.

4-2-3-1 Starting XI versus Nashville SC

The Revolution swiftly took charge of the match with Jack Panayotou & Carles Gil combining and moving the ball up and down the pitch. Dylan Borrero & Brandon Bye also contributed with offensive opportunities with Dave Romney & Đorđe Petrović making excellent defensive stops. Entering the half, the Revolution made one planned substitution which involved center back Omar Gonzalez replacing center back Henry Kessler, who was returning from injury and did not play in the past match versus the Philadelphia Union.

Coming out of halftime, the Revolution made two more substitutions, a straight swap in both the midfield and the attack as midfielder Noel Buck and Designated Player forward Giacomo Vrioni entered the match, replacing midfielder Matt Polster and forward Jozy Altidore.

Just five minutes into the second half, the Revolution managed a complete team goal that began with center-back Omar Gonzalez passing down the right channel into the feet of captain Carles Gil. He swiftly picked up his head and found Giacomo Vrioni in a tight position atop of the box. Giacomo with patience took a touch to his left and looked to shoot the ball into the net. With no angle, Giacomo picked up his head and found Dylan Borrero on the left side of the box with room to operate. Dylan took one touch with his right foot and slotted the ball into the bottom left corner.

In the 68′ minute, the Revolution made four substitutions with Ryan Spaulding, Emmanuel Boateng, Justin Rennicks, and Earl Edwards Jr. replacing Đorđe Petrović, Christian Makoun, Jack Panayotou, and Dylan Borrero. Five minutes later in the 73′ minute, the Revolution made four more substitutions with Dave Romney, Carles Gil, Latif Blessing, and Brandon Bye exiting the match and being replaced by unsigned draft pick Victor Souza, Tommy McNamara, Damien Rivera, and Joshua Bolma.

After 90 minutes, the Revolution ended victorious with a 1-0 victory.

With this victory, the Revolution move to 1-1-1 in the preseason and have a quick turnaround as they are set to face FC Cincinnati on February 14th in Clearwater, FL.
