Revolution II suffer first defeat of 2023 with a 3-0 loss versus Columbus Crew II

FOXBOROUGH, MAThe New England Revolution II (3-1-0, 9 pts.) were defeated by the Columbus Crew II (2-0-1, 7 pts) in a 3-0 match on Sunday afternoon.

The match kicked off at 1:00 p.m. ET at Historic Crew Stadium in Columbus, Ohio.

The team started their lineup in a 4-3-3 formation with goalkeeper Nico Campuzano starting in the net with a backline of (left back) Peyton Miller, (center backs) Pierre Cayet and Tiago Suarez, along with (right back) Jacob Akanyirige. The midfield consisted of Jack Panayotou (left), Jake Rozhansky (center), and Marcos Dias (right). The forward roles were manned by Malcolm Fry (left), Marcos Dias (right), and Jordan Adebayo-Smith as the lone striker.

The squad today featured 3 first-team players. Jack Panayotou started the match, while Joshua Bolma and Damian Rivera began on the bench.

The match kicked off with New England starting from the center circle, sending the ball directly up the right flank of the field into Columbus’ defensive third.

Columbus from the start was quite dominant, and in the 7th minute, they took the early 1-0 lead.

Following buildup from the right side of the field, #16 Isaiah Parente combined with #19 Jacen Russell-Rowe with a give-and-go pass where Parente re-received the ball and took a left-footed shot that snuck past Revolution goalkeeper Nico Campuzano in the bottom right corner.

In the 18th minute, Columbus added to their lead once more.

Following a poor build-out in their defensive third, the Revolution II turned the ball over on the right flank of the field. After #9 Noah Fuson intercepted the ball, he found #97 Yaw Yeboah who swiftly played the ball to #19 Jacen Russell-Rowe. He then took two touches and unleashed a left-footed finesse shot past Revolution II goalkeeper Nico Campuzano into the top left corner.

In the 30th minute, Revolution II defender Jacob Akanyirige entered the referee’s booklet with a yellow card for a harsh foul.

Just before halftime, Columbus had one more attacking play. Revolution II midfielder Jack Panayotou gave the ball away just atop the Revolution penalty area where #9 Noah Fuson took a left-footed shot that struck the bottom left post. The ball then re-entered the penalty area and #19 Jacen Russell-Rowe got to the ball and sent it just over the bar.

The match entered halftime with Columbus leading 2-0.

Entering the 2nd half, Revolution II Head Coach Clint Peay made three changes by substituting Malcolm Fry, Jacob Akanyirige, and Weverton for Colby Quinones, Damian Rivera, and Joshua Bolma.

The match kicked off with Columbus starting from the center circle, sending the ball directly up the right flank of the field into New England’s defensive third.

In the 65th minute, Revolution II Head Coach Clint Peay made his fourth change of the match by substituting Jordan Adebayo-Smith for Ben Awashie.

In the 68th minute, Columbus’ #4 Keegan Hughes entered the referee’s booklet with a yellow card for a harsh foul.

In the 72nd minute, Revolution II Head Coach Clint Peay made his fifth and final change of the match by substituting Peyton Miller for Victor Souza.

Columbus continued their attacking threat on the squad and added another goal in the 78th minute due to another mistake by the Revolution II defense.

Defender Tiago Suarez passed the ball back to goalkeeper Nico Campuzano. He then took a poor first touch and was intercepted by #11 Coleman Gannon. His interception then popped directly to the foot of #22 Marco Micaletto who slotted the ball into the Revolution II goal.

In the 83rd minute, Columbus’ #22 Marco Micaletto entered the referee’s booklet with a yellow card for a harsh foul.

In the 87th minute, Columbus’ #9 Noah Fuson entered the referee’s booklet with a yellow card for a harsh foul.

Following the yellow card, there was little-to-no action, and after the 3 added minutes of the 90, the match ended 3-0 in favor of Columbus Crew II.

The New England Revolution II finished the match with 40% possession, 8 shots (3 on target), 383 total passes (78.1% accuracy), 4 crosses, 3 corners, and 3 offsides. Defensively the squad had 60 duels won, 19 tackles won, 1 save, 27 clearances, 8 fouls, and 1 yellow card.
