Revolution fall 2-0 to NYCFC, lose 5th game of season

FOXBOROUGH, MA– The New England Revolution (1-1-5, 4 pts.) fell 2-0 versus New York City FC (2-2-4, 8 pts.) in a match on Saturday.

The match kicked off at 7:30 p.m. ET at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, NY to a crowd of 20,744.

The team started their lineup in a 4-2-3-1 formation with Henrich Ravas starting in net with a backline of (left back) DeJuan Jones, (center backs) Dave Romney, and Henry Kessler, along with (right back) Nick Lima. The midfield spots were manned by Matt Polster (left defensive midfield) and Ian Harkes (right defensive midfield), with Carles Gil appeared ahead of them (central attacking midfield). The forward roles were manned by Tomás Chancalay (left wing), Nacho Gil (right wing), and Giacomo Vrioni as the lone striker.

The match began with NYCFC starting from the center circle. The ball was played all the way back to goalkeeper #49 Matt Freese, where he elected to launch the ball up to midfield.

The first 20 minutes of the match were back-and-forth with no major chances for either side.

In the 22nd minute, Revolution midfielder Tomás Chancalay was issued a yellow card.

New England’s first chance of the match came in the 25th minute when Tomás Chancalay’s right-footed volley was met with a high-catch by goalkeeper #49 Matt Freese.

Entering the 26th minute, Revolution defender DeJuan Jones went down with an apparent hamstring injury. Revolution head coach Caleb Porter was forced to make his first change of the night by replacing Jones with Ryan Spaulding.

New England had yet another chance in the 27th minute when Carles Gil’s effort was met with a diving catch-save by goalkeeper #49 Matt Freese.

Just 2 minutes later, Tomás Chancalay had yet another opportunity that went just over the bar.

NYCFC’s first major chance came in the 30th minute when forward #9 Mounsef Bakar’s long-distance effort went just over the bar.

Giacomo Vrioni then had the chance of the half in the 33rd minute when his break-away effort was met with a fantastic save by goalkeeper #49 Matt Freese.

In the 41st minute, drama ensued.

Following a 50-50 challenge between Ian Harkes and #35 Mitja Ilenič, the center official initially issued Harkes a straight red card. Following a video review, it was determined that Harkes had gotten the ball first. The initial red card was revoked, and Harkes was issued a yellow card.

In the 45+6 minute, NYCFC goalkeeper #49 Matt Freese was issued a yellow card.

NYCFC had the final chance of the half when #17 Hannes Wolf was stopped point-blank by Henrich Ravas.

After the 45+8 minutes, the match entered halftime level at 0-0.

The second half began with New England starting from the center circle. Giacomo Vrioni played the ball to Matt Polster, who elected to launch the ball into NYCFC’s defensive third.

The first moment of the second half came in the 57th minute where NYCFC gained the 1-0 advantage.

Following a blocked shot attempt by midfielder #17 Hannes Wolf, the ball popped out to midfielder #26 Agustín Ojeda unleashed a long shot that went right into the top corner.

Just two minutes later, NYCFC had two clear chances from midfielder #55 Keaton Parks and midfielder #26 Agustín Ojeda that were both met with stellar saves by Henrich Ravas.

Entering the 61st minute, Revolution head coach Caleb Porter made his second change of the match by substituting Nacho Gil and replacing him with Esmir Bajraktarevic.

Just one minute later, NYCFC head coach Nick Cushing made his first changes of the match by substituting midfielders #26 Agustín Ojeda and #17 Hannes Wolf and replacing them with forwards #88 Malachi Jones and #11 Julián Fernández.

NYCFC had yet another amazing opportunity in the 66th minute when midfielder #11 Julián Fernández unleashed a left-footed shot towards the top corner that was met with a fantastic save by Henrich Ravas.

Entering the 72nd minute, NYCFC should’ve had a second when forward #88 Malachi Jones missed an absolute sitter and sent the ball wide of the goal.

In the 77th minute, Revolution defender Henry Kessler was issued a yellow card after fighting with #9 Mounsef Bakar.

Just one minute later, NYCFC midfielder #55 Keaton Parks was issued a yellow card.

Entering the 78th minute, New England almost leveled the match after a deflected shot by Ryan Spaulding was met with a save by #49 Matt Freese.

Entering the 80th minute, Revolution head coach Caleb Porter made his final two changes of the match by substituting Nick Lima and Ian Harkes and replacing them with Andrew Farrell and Tommy McNamara.

In the 83rd minute, NYCFC head coach Nick Cushing made his third change of the match by substituting forward #9 Mounsef Bakar and replacing him with forward #16 Alonso Martínez.

In the 89th minute, New England had the best chance of the half after a delivery by Carles Gil was met with a header by Tomas Chancalay. His header goalwards was met with a fantastic save by #49 Matt Freese.

Entering the 91st minute, NYCFC head coach Nick Cushing made his fourth change of the match by substituting midfielder #10 Santiago Rodríguez and replacing him with midfielder #8 Andrés Perea.

Less than one minute later, NYCFC added to their lead.

Following a long-ball, the ball was headed by Henry Kessler away from danger, but recovered by midfielder #11 Julián Fernández, who took a long-shot that went directly into the top left corner for the 2-0 advantage.

After the 90+5 minutes, NYCFC held on for the 2-0 victory.

The New England Revolution (1-1-5, 4 pts.) head out to the Toronto, Canada where they are set to face MLS Eastern Conference side Toronto FC (1-2-4, 5 pts.) on Saturday, April 20th. The match kicks off in BMO Field at 7:30 p.m. ET on MLS Season Pass on the Apple TV app.
