The Portland Thorns opened the NWSL with an espectacular 5-0 win over the visiting Chicago Red Stars. The Thorns capitalized on their excellent form after their Challenge Cup win and in just 30 minutes, they were leading 4-0. First with an own goal by Red Stars defender Tierna Davidson (4’), followed by Christine Sinclair from the penalty spot (13’), then Sophia Smith in two occasions (16’ and 30’). The fifth and final goal had to wait till minute 72, when Tyler Lussi, who subbed in during the second half, rounded up the result.
