New England Revolution Leagues Cup group stage schedule announced

FOXBOROUGH, MA– The New England Revolution’s League’s Cup group stage schedule has been announced.

The inaugural Leagues Cup competition is set to begin this summer as teams from MLS, and Liga MX will pause their respective league seasons from Friday, July 21st to Saturday, August 19th. The tournament which will be played throughout the United States and Canada will consist of 77 matches and will feature all of the 47 first division clubs in Liga MX and MLS.

The Champions of the competition along with the second and third-place finishing teams will automatically qualify for the Concacaf Champions League and fight to have the chance to earn a spot in the FIFA Club World Cup.

The New England Revolution are set to face Liga MX side Atlético de San Luis (currently 15th in Liga MX with 2-3-5 record, 9 points) and the New York Red Bulls (currently 12th in MLS eastern conference with a 0-1-1 record, 1 point.)

Atlético de San Luis is participating in its first international competition. They were promoted to Mexico’s top flight in 2019 following a victory versus their rivals Dorados de Sinaloa in a tournament championship match. Since performing in Liga MX, the team has finished 13th (2019-20), 17th (2020-21), and 10th (2021-22). The club began its play in 2013 and since March 16th, 2017, they have held an alliance with Spanish side Atletico Madrid, who own 50% of the club along with the state of San Luis and other minority owners.

New York Red Bulls are participating in their first international competition since 2019 (reached quarterfinals of Concacaf Champions League). The club has qualified for the CCL a total of five times and are an inaugural member of Major League Soccer. The club began its play in MLS back in 1996 as the New York/ New Jersey MetroStars. The club was sold in 2006 to Red Bull GmbH and rebranded as the New York Red Bulls. The team has faced New England a total of 8 times in the MLS Cup Playoffs with New England holding the advantage with a 4W-3D- 1L record. The club historically has been the runner-up in the MLS Cup Final once in 2008 and was the runner up in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup twice in 2003 and 2017 respectively. The club has won the Supporter’s Shield 3 times in 2013, 2015, and 2018.

The Revolution are set to make their seventh continental tournament debut in Leagues Cup this summer. The club previously had competed in the Concacaf Champions League, Concacaf Champions Cup, and North American Superliga (which they won in 2008). The team most recently played in the Concacaf Champions League in 2022, where they made a quarterfinal exit following a 3-3 on aggregate (4-3 penalty shoot-out loss) to Pumas U.N.A.M of Liga MX.

All matches of Leagues Cup will be available on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV. Tickets for the match are included in the Season Member package with the New England Revolution, with individual tickets being made available tomorrow morning, March 10th, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. ET.
