GAME PREVIEW: A tie is a step in a better direction, a win should be next here for Columbus

San Jose Earthquakes (1-3-2, 5 points) versus Columbus Crew (3-3-2, 11 points)

4/28, 7:30 PM EST, ESPN +
Columbus hasn’t done well as of late against teams at the bottom of the conference table.

During their three game losing streak, the Crew lost to both Chicago and D.C. United when both were in last place.

Against 5 point San Jose at home this week Columbus needs to make that advantage count for something shortly.

Last week, San Jose lost to Orlando City SC 3-2.

That scoreline sounds more competitive then the game really was as in the 70th minute the scoreline was 3-0 OCSC.

However, San Jose midfielder Florian Jungwirth comes into Saturday’s contest in good form as he scored both of the Earthquakes late consolations.

Crewture’s projected Crew lineup:

My last lineup projection was a bit exotic.

And a bit sarcastic.
In a over the top way, was attempting to make the point that the starting eleven has to be held a bit more accountable for three straight losses, especially when two of them were against last place opposition.
Zardes was better this week at being involved, getting touches, and of course scoring a goal.
That’s more then half of the battle for Crew players currently. So, won’t be as exotic this week as when you score you deserve to be up top.
Nevertheless, I think Sosa or Opoku as a late striker sub would make a bit more sense compared to Adam Jahn lately.

I don’t think a tie means Berhalter is pleased and should go back to everything as it is.

So, I’m interested to perhaps see Ricardo Clark with Wil Trapp.

Artur has been great and love having him but last week wasn’t his best time out.

Berhalter always talks about resting players. Trapp missed a game for national duty and Clark came in and scored a goal. May be time for another run out this time for Artur, just to see if a positive in the win category could occur from it.

Hansen was inches away from scoring twice last week, although not miles ahead of Martinez I think Hansen’s play was enough to deserve another attempt at it.

San Jose’s projected lineup:

San Jose ran out the following lineup last week:

It wasn’t very successful as Orlando City went up 3-0.

But after substitutions of Jackson Yueill and Valeri Qazaishvili in midfield, teamed with Florian Jungwirth, Jungwirth then scored two goals.

So, whatever changes were made at the end by Stahre I would go back to.

PREDICTION: Against a Western Conference last place opponent at home, I don’t think even Columbus can screw this one up.

Columbus 3-0. Goals by Zardes, Santos, Hansen.
