Vancouver Whitecaps 2-Colorado Rapids 2

The Vancouver Whitecaps continued their run of pulling off points in difficult spots on Saturday night at BC Place. Despite going down early Marc Dos Santos’ side stubborness once again came out, scoring late in the second half to earn the 2-2 draw with the Colorado Rapids.

The Rapids attack, which has been hot and cold all year, was decidedly warm early at BC Place with Diego Rubio (8′) and Andre Shinyashiki (20′) each scoring in the first twenty minutes.

While it looked like the Rapids might get their second road win of the season (especially after Kei Kamara smashed a shot off of the bar in the 30th minute) costly fouls once again proved to be their undoing. Just before halftime Rubio tripped Ali Adnan inside of the penalty area setting up a late direct kick for the home side. Fredy Montero made the most of his chance, cutting the Caps deficit to one with his sixth goal of the season. Both sides had their opportunities to take control of the game in the second half but it would be a Yordy Reyna free kick in the 80th minute that proved to be the difference.

The loss of two points really stings for Colorado (4-9-4, 16 points) who could have moved closer to the seventh and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. They will host LAFC next Friday night (10pm EST, UNiMas).

As for Vancouver (4-6-7, 18 points), while the late goals rescued a point it could be another two points lost at home for the Cascadian side. While it is certainly not time to panic the number of draws, especially at home are starting rack up. They will head to Seattle on Saturday to take on the Sounders in a Cascadia Cup match (10pm EST/7pm PST, TSN/ESPN+).
