Vancouver Whitecaps 1-FC Dallas 2

The Vancouver Whitecaps playoff chances were dealt a significant blow on Sunday at BC Place. Despite having the lion’s share of possesionthe ‘Caps failed to create enough attacking chances losing 2-1 to FC Dallas.

The Hoops took the lead late in the first half with Santiago Mosuera’s goal in the 42nd minute, his fifth of the season. Vancouver did tie the score in the 66th minute after Kei Kamara connected on an Alphonso Davies cross from the left flank. The Sierra Leone international headed home the goal, his thirteenth of the season. The two sides traded attacking chances late. Michael Barrios hit a shot from inside the eighteen that was saved point-blank by Whitecaps goalkeeper Stefan Marinovic and Kamara hitting another header that went wide of the mark.

But it was a Matt Hedges header in the 87th minute that proved to be the difference in the match. Hedges finished off a wild series of events that saw a Barrios corner kick be flicked backwards by Maxi Urruti right at the USMNT center-back. Using his height advantage, Hedges leaped over Vancouver to knock home the game-winner.

With the win and Sporting Kansas City’s 2-0 loss to the Philadelphia Union earlier in the day Dallas (15-6-8, 43 points) moved back into sole possession of first place in Major League Soccer’s Western Conference. They will stay in the Pacific Northwest over the next week, travelling down to Portland on Saturday to take on the Timbers (10:30 PM EST/9: 30 PM CST/7:30 PM PST, ESPN +).

As for the Whitecaps (11-11-7, 40 points) the loss could not come at a worse time. Although they didn’t lose any ground on the Seattle Sounders (13-11-5, 44 points), who lost 2-0 to the Los Angeles Galaxy (11-11-8, 41 points) on Sunday, they didn’t gain any ground either. Vancouver will travel down to StubHub on Saturday to take on the Galaxy with the match likely playing as an eliimination match.
