San Jose Earthquakes 1- Toronto FC 1

After 141 goals it can be a bit difficult to describe how important of a player Chris Wondolowski is for the San Jose Earthquakes. The Earthquakes forward hit another one on Saturday night which pushed him to within five goals of Landon Donovan. Perhaps more importantly though his tap in over the weekend was enough to keep the Quakes season alive, securing a 1-1 draw with Toronto FC at Avaya Stadium.

The two sides were neck-in-neck in the first half with their respective goalkeepers Alex Bono for Toronto and Andrew Tarbell for San Jose, having to pull off some heroics to keep the score level. But the second was a different story with perhaps both sides feeling the pressure to get points and keep their MLS Cup Playoff dreams in play. Forward Lucas Janson struck first for Toronto, polishing off a pass from Gregory van der Wiel in the 59th minute. The goal was Janson’s first for The Reds, having signed with the club on loan just ten days prior.

Needing a goal, Earthquakes coach Mikael Stahre turned to his super-sub Wondolowski to get his side back in the match. Wondo didn’t disappoint, getting his own rebound off a blocked shot by Bono in the 77th minute and knocking his second chance into the back of the net.

Having secured the 1-1 draw, the Quakes (3-13-8, 17 points) also continued their recent run of positive form, having secured points in three of their last four matches (1-1-2, 5 points). Their three game homestand continues on Saturday against the Vancouver Whitecaps (10pm EST/7pm PST, TSN2, ESPN +).

Toronto FC (6-12-6, 24 points) meanwhile find themselves in a bit of a jam. The defending MLS Cup Champions are currently in ninth place in the Eastern Conference, nine points off of the sixth and final playoff spot. While they did win the 2018 Canadian Championship last week their MLS form has left a bit to be desired. They will hope to turn things around next weekend when they host their hated rivals the Montreal Impact on Saturday (8PM EST/5PM PST TVAS, ESPN+).
