D.C. United 3-Columbus Crew 1

Entering into Saturday’s match against the Columbus Crew D.C. United needed a little bit of a spark. Who knew that it would take an errant call to make it happen? Thanks in part to an interesting decision from referee Ted Unkel United snapped their three game winless run at home, earning the 3-1 win over Columbus Crew.

The controversy came in just the 20th minute after Crew midfielder Pedro Santos appeared to give his side the early lead. However, the goal was called back after VAR ruled that Luciano Acosta was tripped by a Crew player. D.C. took advantage of the second chance with Luciano Acosta (27′) and Wayne Rooney (45+4′) each scoring before the half. Paul Arriola added a third in the 61st minute. An own goal from Bill Hamid gave the Crew a bit of life late but it wasn’t enough to avoid defeat.
