D.C. United 2-Atlanta United FC 0

Very rarely are big questions answered on the first day of the Major League Soccer season but it seems as if D.C. United supporters got one on Sunday night. After an offseason in which he was nearly moved to Paris St. Germain the big question on the minds of every supporter was, “What will Luciano Acosta’s mindset be this season.” The answer at least from one match is quite definitively a positive one. Against Atlanta United FC the man known as La Joya scored tore through the defending champions defense in a 2-0 win at Audi Field.

Despite the rain, sleet, and sometimes snowy conditions in the nation’s capital United’s attacking duo of Acosta and Wayne Rooney showed little signs of a slip from last season’s form. The two were integral in opening up the Atlanta attack in the first half, creating space for Paul Arriola to knock home the first goal in the 41st minute. Although Atlanta did come alive a bit in the second Acosta shut the door on any possibilities of a comeback with his goal in the 58th minute. United goalkeeper Bill Hamid had a relatively quiet afternoon, making two saves to preserve the clean sheet.

On hand to cover the match was our new Prost photographer Joshua Ganzermiller. You can check out more of his work on our D.C. United SmugMug page or give him a shoutout on Twitter.
