Colorado Rapids 3-Minnesota United FC 2

The Colorado Rapids nine game winless streak is over. It wasn’t easy on Saturday night at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park against Minnesota United FC but the end result was three points which sent the 13, 664 in attendance home happy. Thanks to two late goals and a timely red card the Rapids (3-9-3, 12 points) defeated Minnesota (5-9-1, 16 points) 3-2.

Things did not start out on the right foot for Colorado with Miguel Ibarra scoring for The Loons in the 20th minute. While Edgar Castillo leveled the score at one with his goal in the 50th minute, Minnesota took the lead back in the 65th minute with a goal from Christian Ramirez. But the Rapids attack weren’t finished with Joe Mason finishing off a clever pass from Shkelzen Gashi in the 74th minute for his third goal of the season. After Ibarra was sent off for violent conduct in the 77th minute the Rapids attack went looking for the game winner. Although Loon goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth was successful at stemming their advances for the most part Tommy Smith found the breakthrough in the 97th minute.
