Back by popular demand and a need to try new and interesting beers it is time for this week’s D.C. United drink your enemy selection. For those that are new to this every week yours truly picks a beer that is geographically close to the team that United are playing. There are two reasons for this. One, beer is great. Aside from maybe Jameson out of the bottle there is no better drink for a soccer match. Second, there is nothing better than drinking a regional beer while watching your side defeat their opponents. While one cannot always drink the tears of their rivals (only Cartman can do that) one can certainly drink their beer.

So with United most likely heading north to take on New York City Football Club this week we are trying Sixpoint Brewery’s Global Warmer. With the Northeast going through a snowstorm in March and the head of the Environmental Protection Agency stating that Carbon Dioxide doesn’t lead to climate change now seems to be the perfect time to try a beer with an environmental theme.

When looking at Global Warmer the first thing that catches one’s eye is the can. As opposed to the typical can beer Global Warmer is in a long slender can. Upon first sight it looks like an energy drink. That look makes it stand out though. So many can beers look exactly the same and quite frankly it is a deterrent when is deciding what type of beer one wants for the evening. Think about how many times you have been to the beer store, walked by the canned beer and said “Noe.”

But Global Warmer is different though. Its packaging, the can size, and its bright red color make it look different from the rest. Plus carrying cans of beer that are the color red will most likely agitate NYCFC supporters given that they are the blue in the ‘red-blue’ derby.

Aesthetics aside this is an exceptional beer. Although it is a Imperial Red Ale (Another red reference!) it is not a very heavy beer. Upon first taste it actually very light, citrus taste to it. Many breweries have been experimenting with orange rinds during the brewing process. It is something that has been used in belgian-styled ales and lambicks for years but recently has made its way into traditional ales and india pale ales. Global Warmer is definitely a cross-section between these two types of styles and the brewers at Sixpoint pull it off.

The other interesting thing about this beer is the color. When poured into a glass Global Warmer shows off a beautiful copper color. It is the type of beer that one would want to have with a slice of pizza from a brick oven. It is a really unique beer but at the same time it feels like a New York City beer. So go give Sixpoint Brewery’s Global Warmer and enjoy Sunday’s match between D.C. United and NYCFC.
