Miguel Almiron (Atlanta United to Newcastle United)

Miguel Almiron made headlines in 2019 when he became the most expensive player to be transferred from the MLS. He made the move from Atlanta United to English Premier League club Newcastle United for £21 million and has since made 80 appearances for the North East club.

Despite Almiron not being able to reproduce the form in front of goal that he showed for Atlanta, where he found the net 21 times in 62 games, he has been a regular name in the starting XI at Newcastle and has become somewhat of a fan favourite due to his work ethic on the pitch.

Almiron’s rise to the top flight of English football has been truly amazing. He was rejected from multiple squad at a young age for being too lightweight but made his mark when playing for Argentine side Lanús having helped them win the Primera Division. It was that season that prompted newly created MLS side Atlanta United to make their $8m move for the Paraguayan where he would remain for two years until his record move to the Premier League.

Alphonso Davies (Vancouver Whitecaps – Bayern Munich)

Alphonso Davies was born in a refugee camp in Ghana after his parents fled Liberia during the Liberian Civil War. He was raised in Canada from the age of five where he joined the Whitecaps FC Academy at the age of fifteen. His impressive play meant that he quickly gained a spot in the first team after just 11 matches and he would be a regular starter for the next two seasons.

It was in 2018, when Davies was just 17 years of age, that Bundesliga side Bayern Munich made their move and signed the youngster for a deal totalling an estimated $22 million. His transfer was for a record amount at the time before Miguel Almiron’s move the following year. Davies made 6 appearances for Bayern Munich II before making his way into the first team where he has played 58 matches as a left-back.

Tyler Adams (New York Red Bulls – RB Leipzig)

Tyler Shaan Adams is only 22 but has achieved a place at one of Europe’s biggest clubs. He came through the ranks in the MLS having played for the under-13, under-14 and under-16 sides in the Red Bulls Academy from 2011. It took four years from joining the academy to gain a place with the New York Red Bulls reserves and only another season to feature in the first team.

Three seasons with NY Red Bulls was enough to attract Bundesliga side RB Leipzig to make a move for Adams where he would be reunited with his former coach Jesse Marsch. Adams has now played 51 matches for Leipzig since 2018, finding the net just once but it was the goal that sent RB Leipzig through to their first ever UEFA Champions League semi-final after beating Atletico Madrid 2-1with Adams’ 88th minute strike.
