Josef Martínez collects record goal that leads Atlanta to a 2-1 victory.

Atlanta United collected a 2-1 victory over Orlando City SC Friday night at Orlando City Stadium. Josef Martínez broke and tied Major League Soccer records. He broke the single-season scoring record with his 28th goal and he tied the record for most consecutive matches with a goal in his ninth-straight match.

Atlanta United Head Coach Tata Martino commeted on the record setting goal, “With Josef, we knew he was going to break the record. It was just a matter of if he could do it sooner or later. The good thing is he did it sooner. Now this will calm him down. On top of that, he did it with a very nice goal.”

Scoring Details

Atlanta United 1 – Orlando City SC 0 — Leandro González Pírez 21′
Atlanta midfielder Ezequiel Barco delivered a beautiful free kick that soared over the head of Josef Martínez and forced Orlando City goalkeeper Joe Bendik into a save. However, Bendik was only able to get body on the ball and it fell into the path of Atlanta defender Leandro González Pírez, who took a shot that bounced off Bendik and then back off Pírez and causally strolled into the net past Bendik.

Atlanta United 1 – Orlando City SC 1 — Scott Sutter (Will Johnson, Chris Mueller) 39′
Orlando midfielder Chris Mueller dropped off the ball to Will Johnson just inside the penalty box. Johnson laid off a backheel for Scott Sutter, who crushed a shot past Atlanta keeper Brad Guzan into the top-left corner.

Atlanta United 2 – Orlando City SC 1 — Josef Martínez (Julian Gressel) 74′
The record setting goal!
The play started when Tito Villalba gained possession on the top of the Atlanta box and played touch give-and-go  with Julian Gressel. As Gressel cut through the midfield, he laid a precise pass to Martínez in the middle of the field allowing for a beautiful one touch to the box. Miguel Almirón made a complimentary run pulling defenders with him to the right, as Martínez cut back on his right foot  leaving Orlando defender Jonathon Spector out of position. Martinez then chipped the ball over the outstretched arms of Bendik.
