Gustavo Bou leads New England to victory over Philadelphia Union

FOXBOROUGH, MA– The New England Revolution (14-10-9, 52 pts.) were victorious 2-1 over the Philadelphia Union (14-10-9, 55 pts.) in a match on Saturday night.

The match kicked off at 6:00 p.m. ET at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts to a crowd of 41,355.

The team started their lineup in a 4-3-3 formation with Jacob Jackson starting in net with a backline of (left back) Ryan Spaulding, (center backs) Dave Romney, and Andrew Farrell, along with (right back) DeJuan Jones. The midfield spots were manned by Tommy McNamara (left midfield), Matt Polster (center) and Noel Buck (right midfield). The front three was manned by TomĂĄs Chancalay (left wing), Carles Gil (right wing), and Gustavo Bou as the lone striker.

Midfielder Ian Harkes remains unavailable due to a fractured his Adam’s Apple. His timetable is unknown.

Defender Kessler was not in squad due to caution in his ongoing recovery from his hamstring injury.

New England Revolution midfielder Carles Gil (Team MVP), defender Dave Romney (Defensive Player of the Year), and Andrew Farrell (Humanitarian of the Year) were all honored prior to the match.

The match began with New England starting from the center circle. Gustavo Bou played the ball backwards to Matt Polster, who then played it wide to DeJuan Jones, who decided to build out of the back.

In the 7th minute, Philadelphia Union midfielder #26 Nathan Harriel was issued a yellow card for a foul on defender Ryan Spaulding.

The first moment of the match came in the 16th minute, when Philadelphia Union gained the early 1-0 advantage.

Following a long-ball over the top by left back #27 Kai Wagner, the ball took an awkward bounce and forced Dave Romney to head the ball to the right. However, goalkeeper Jacob Jackson was out of position, which caused a scramble in the box. #9 Julian Carranza took a touch, was taken down in the box. However, the ball hit the back of #7 Mikael Uhre, who fell to the floor trying to go for the ball in the clash as well. The bouncing ball  then found #9 Julian Carranza, still on the floor. He took a shot which went into the bottom corner for the easy goal. This is Carranza’s 14th MLS goal this season.

Just 1 minute later, the Philadelphia Union continued their attack, which was led by a shot by #7 Mikael Uhre, which was easily saved by Jacob Jackson.

Just 8 minutes later, in the 23rd minute, the New England Revolution were granted a penalty kick.

Following a  low-driven cross into the box by Tomås Chancalay, the ball found Carles Gil, who elected for a first time strike. His shot however was blocked by the outstretched hand of Philadelphia Union defender #17 Damian Lowe.

Due to the infraction, #17 Damian Lowe was issued a yellow card.

Due to Lowe’s yellow card, Philadelphia Union defender #27 Kai Wagner continued to complain to the center official, and was issued a yellow card of his own as well.

Forward Gustavo Bou stepped up to take the penalty and buried it past #18 Andre Blake for his 6th MLS goal of the season.

Philadelphia’s next moment of the match came in the 30th minute when #9 Julian Carranza took a left-footed shot which was met with a save by Jacob Jackson.

New England’s next chance came in the 39th minute when Gustavo Bou’s right footed effort was met with a save by #18 Andre Blake.

Less than 2 minutes later, in the 41st minute, the Revolution added to their lead.

Following an interception by midfielder Noel Buck, he found Carles Gil on the run, who took two touches before slipping in forward Gustavo Bou, who took two touches before unleashing a right-footed shot that was initially saved by #18 Andre Blake, but due to the conditions, the ball slipped and went into the back of the net for Bou’s 7th MLS goal of the season.

After the 45+2 minutes, the match entered halftime with New England ahead 2-1.

Revolution Academy midfielder/forward Olger Escobar (United Healthcare Academy Player of the Year) was honored during halftime. He was present with interim-Sporting Director and Academy Director Curt Onalfo.

The second half began with the Philadelphia Union playing the ball backwards and beginning to build out of the back left flank.

One of the best chances of the second half came in the 72nd minute when Gustavo Bou found Carles Gil atop of the box for a left-footed strike which was met with a routine easy save by #18 Andre Blake.

Less than 1 minute later, the Philadelphia Union had an unreal counter attack which was met with two balls across the six yard box, and then was met with a left-footed strike by #16 Jack McGlynn, which flew just over the crossbar.

The Union continued their attacking dominance on New England as a right footed long-distance effort by #20 JesĂșs Beuno  went just wide of the right post in the 76th minute.

Entering the 87th minute, the Philadelphia Union had thought they had equalized.

After a free kick taken by #27 Kai Wagner, the ball found #26 Nathan Harriel, who took a sliding shot which rocketed past Jacob Jackson, however, #9 Julian Carranza and #5 Jakob Glesnes were both lined up in an offside position and impeded the view of Jacob Jackson, so the goal was chalked out.

In the 90+1 minute, Revolution head coach Clint Peay made his first and only substitution of the match by replacing forward Gustavo Bou with forward Justin Rennicks.

In the 90+2 minute, Phialdelphia Union forward #9 Julian Carranza was issued a yellow card for complaining for a no-call on a potential penalty. The card is for embellishment.

After the 90+2 minutes, the match ended with New England holding on to the 2-1 victory.

Following the full time whistle, it was noted that Revolution defender Dave Romney joined Jose Goncalves (2013) as the only player in New England Revolution history to play all 3060 minutes of an MLS regular season. He is one of three players in MLS this season to achieve this feat.

Following the conclusion of this match, the Columbus Crew were victorious over CF Montreal. Due to this result,  Columbus have jumped the Philadelphia Union in the standings, meaning that the New England Revolution (5th seed) will face the Philadelphia Union (4th seed) in the first round best-of-three series of the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs.

The regular season series went in New England’s favor 0W-0D-0L.

In regard to historic marks, the Revolution broke their club record for average home attendance. The attendance number, 23,940, is a +1500 improvement from last season. It is the best home attendance since —-.

Forward Gustavo Bou made his 100th MLS appearance for the club. During the match, he scored his 50th goal for the club and moved to 5th all time in New England Revolution scoring.

Midfielder Noel Buck became the first Revolution homegrown player to make 20 MLS starts in a single MLS season since Diego Fagundez and Scott Caldwell (2018).

The New England Revolution (15-10-9, 55 pts.) head to Chester, Pennsylvania to begin the best-of-three series with the Philadelphia Union (15-10-9, 55 pts.) on Saturday, October 28th. The match kicks off at Subaru Park Stadium at 5:00 p.m. ET on MLS Season Pass on the Apple TV app.
