Portland Thorns fought back from a one-goal deficit to a 2-1 win on Sunday, August 20, in a regular season match with North Carolina Courage. Match disputed in poor air quality due to regional wildfires at Providence Park, Portland, OR. North Carolina opened the scoring minute 20 of the first half, executing a free kick, that also resulted in Portland defender Kelli Hubly’s ejection. One player down, the Thorns rallied and with two goals, Hanna Betfort in the 41st minute, tied the match, while an exultant Sophia Smith scored the second after being on the field for just one minute in the 69th.
