Revolution II draw Toronto FC II 1-1, win in penalty shootout 4-2

FOXBOROUGH, MA— The New England Revolution II (8-5-3, 30 pts.) tied Toronto FC II (3-8-4, 15 pts) in a 1-1 match, but defeated them 4-2 in penalties on Friday afternoon.

The match kicked off at 5:00 p.m. ET at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.

The team started their lineup in a 4-3-3 formation with goalkeeper Jacob Jackson starting in the net with a backline of (left back) Colby Quiñónes, (center backs) Pierre Cayet and Tiago Suarez, along with (right back) Victor Souza. The midfield consisted of Jake Rozhansky (left), Marcos Dias (center), and Ben Awashie (right). The forward roles were manned by Italo (left), Malcolm Fry (right), and Jordan Adebayo-Smith (central) as the lone striker.

The squad today featured 0 first-team players.

The Club also has a short bench (4) due to the ongoing MLS NEXT Cup Tournament that is taking place in Dallas, Texas.

The match kicked off with Toronto FC starting from the midfield kickoff. #82 Julian Altobelli took the kick and played it backwards to #65 Antony Curic who quickly swung the ball right to advance the ball up the field.

In the 15th minute, Toronto FC II midfielder #68 Lucas Olguin was shown a yellow card for a foul on Marcos Dias.

In the 19th minute, Toronto FC II forward #33 Reshaun Walkes was shown a yellow card for a foul on Colby Quiñónes.

From the 20th minute to the 35th minute, there wasn’t alot of action from either side, but entering the 36th minute, New England broke the 0-0 deadlock.

Following a through-ball, forward Jordan Adebay0-Smith took on midfielder #65 Antony Curic and defender #76 Lazar Stefanovic. He took a few touches and took a low-driven near post shot that snuck through the hands of goalkeeper #40 Adisa De Rosario. This is Jordan’s team leading 7th goal of the season. (Adebayo-Smith is currently T-6th in top scoring for MLS NEXT Pro).

In the 42nd minute, New England Revolution II forward Jordan Adebayo-Smith was shown a yellow card for a foul on Toronto FC II defender #76 Lazar Stefanovic.

Just before the stroke of halftime, Toronto FC had their best chance of the half as Toronto midfielder #72 Jordan Faria drove toward the Revolution defense and played the ball to his left to find defender #73 Jesús Batiz in an advanced position. His one-time left-footed strike hit the left post and ricocheted back into the area to find Jake Rozhansky.

The match shortly after would enter halftime with New England ahead 1-0.

Less than 1 minute into the second half, Toronto believed they had leveled the match after forward #33 Reshaun Walkes sliced through the defense and played a through ball in behind to find #72 Jordan Faria for the easy finish, however, Faria was offsides.

Entering the 60th minute, Toronto FC leveled the match with a screamer.

After an interception by #65 Antony Curic, he found #72 Jordan Faria who took a few touches before playing it to forward #82 Julian Altobelli. He took 1 touch before unleashing a right footed shot that flew into the top right corner past Jacob Jackson to level the match. This is Altobelli’s 3rd goal of the season.

In the 71st minute, Toronto FC II midfielder #93 Ife Adenuga was shown a yellow card for a foul on Colby Quiñónes.

In the 86th minute, New England Revolution II forward Marcos Dias and Toronto FC II defender #62 Rohan Goulbourne were both shown a yellow card for arguing with the center official over a handball call.

In the 92nd minute, Toronto FC II forward #72 Jordan Faria was shown a yellow card for a foul on Jacob Akanyirige.

 

The Revolution’s first penalty kick taker was Marcos Dias, His right footed shot was converted into the top left corner past #25 Paul Walters to take the 1-0 lead.

Toronto FC II’s first penalty kick taker was #82 Julian Altobelli. His right-footed shot went into the top right corner to level it 1-1.

The Revolution’s second penalty kick taker was Jacob Akanyirige. His right footed shot was converted into the bottom right past #25 Paul Walters take the 2-1 lead.

Toronto FC II’s second penalty kick taker was #86 Alec Diaz. His right-footed shot went into the top left corner to level it 2-2.

Revolution forward Jordan Adebayo-Smith stepped up to take the third penalty kick, and his right footed shot into the bottom right corner was saved to keep it level at 2-2.

Next up for Toronto FC II was #85 Marko Stojadinovic. His right footed shot into the bottom right corner was saved to keep it level at 2-2.

Revolution midfielder Ben Awashie then stepped up to take the fourth penalty kick, and his right footed shot went into the bottom right corner for the 3-2 advantage.

Next up for Toronto FC II was #95 Ife Adenuga. His right footed shot was saved in the bottom left corner to level the scoreline 3-2.

To win the match, Nakye Greenidge-Duncan stepped up to take the fifth and final penalty. His left footed shot snuck into the bottom left corner for the victory.
