Bruce plays the kids, Gil and Bou have record setting nights, and 17-year-old Noel Buck scores the winner as the Revolution comeback to win 2-1

FOXBOROUGH, MA– The New England Revolution (4-0-1, 12 pts.) defeated D.C. United (1-1-3, 4 pts.) in a 2-1 come from behind victory on Saturday night.

The match kicked off at 7:30 p.m. ET at Audi Field, in Washington, DC to a crowd of 16,509.

The team started their lineup in a 4-4-2 formation with Đorđe Petrović starting in net with a backline of (left back) DeJuan Jones, (center backs) Dave Romney and Henry Kessler, along with (right back) Brandon Bye. The midfield consisted of Esmir Bajrakterevic (left midfield), Matt Polster (left central midfield), Noel Buck (right central midfield) and Jack Panayotou (right midfield). The forward roles were manned by (left) Captain Gustavo Bou and (right) Bobby Wood.

Saturday’s match featured 3 teenagers in the starting 11 for the New England Revolution, midfielder Jack Panayatou (18) made his first career MLS start, midfielder Esmir Bajraktarevic (18) made his second career MLS start, and midfielder Noel Buck (17) started his fifth consecutive match for 2023. The average age of the Revolution midfield for tonight’s match was 20.25 years old.

Forward DP Gustavo Bou wore the captain’s armband as Carles Gil began the match on the bench, as he was returning from injury.

The match began with the Revolution starting with the midfield kickoff with the ball swiftly being sent up the left flank of the field into the DC United attacking 3rd.

The Revolution looked to attack early on as the first moment of the match came in just the 2nd minute as midfielder Esmir Bajraktarevic took on a man on the right flank and entered the box unleashing a shot that was saved by DC United keeper #1 Tyler Miller.

Just one minute later, a close-range volley following a few deflections in the box by Bobby Wood was saved once more by #1 Tyler Miller.

In the 10th minute, The Revolution continued knocking on the doorstep. During an attacking play down the right flank, defender Brandon Bye sent a ball into the box to find forward Gustavo Bou whose effort from close range went high above the bar.

In the 18th minute, DC United had their first major chance when DC United forward #20 Christian Benteke took the ball down the byline where he slid the ball back atop the 18-yard-box and found #25 Jackson Hopkins, whose effort went over the bar.

In the 29th minute, DC United continued their attack where Benteke combined once more with Hopkins whose low shot effort was easily saved by Đorđe Petrović.

In the 32nd minute, The Revolution’s best chance of the half came when Esmir Bajraktarevic took a short corner and found fellow youngster Jack Panayatou. His shot from well outside of the 18-yard-box went just wide.

In the 44th minute, DC United struck first. #33 Jacob Greene played a low driven ball to the left side of the field to #25 Jackson Hopkins. His first-time pass into the area was left by #21 Theodore Ku-Dipietro and found #20 Christian Benteke. While holding the ball up atop the 18-yard box, Benteke found #2 Ruan on the right side of the 18-yard box who then sent a back post cross to connect once again with Benteke.

The match entered halftime, with D.C. United leading 1-0.

The second half began with the DC United starting with the midfield kickoff with the ball being sent straight back to the keeper and straight up the field into the Revolution attacking third.

Entering the 48th minute, DC United went on the attack when#2 Ruan found #20 Christian Benteke atop of the 18-yard-box. His backheel flick found #25 Jackson Hopkins, whose effort was stopped by Đorđe Petrović.

7 minutes later, in the 56th minute, left back DeJuan Jones cut inside and served a right-footed ball into the box to find a wide-open Gustavo Bou whose header was saved by #1 Tyler Miller.

In the 59th minute, D.C. United’s #3 Derrick Williams was issued a yellow card for a harsh tackle on New England Revolution —————— .

Entering the 64th minute, Head Coach Bruce Arena decided to make his first changes of the match. Forward Jozy Altidore and midfielder Carles Gil entered the match to replace forward Bobby Wood and midfielder Esmir Bajraktarevic. This is Jozy Altidore’s first appearance of the season. Also, this is Carles Gil’s first appearance since his picking up a hamstring injury versus Los Angeles FC on Saturday, March 12th.

Not even 20 seconds after stepping on the field, midfielder Carles Gil instantly made his impact on the match.

In the 65th minute, right back Brandon Bye found midfielder Carles Gil. Carles took one touch, opened his body up, and sent a left footed hail-mary pass into the box to find forward Gustavo Bou. The forward chest-trapped the ball and took a low driven right-footed shot which snuck past D.C. United’s goalkeeper #1 Tyler Miller.

The goal was a major milestone for both forward Gustavo Bou & midfielder Carles Gil. For Gustavo, the goal marked his 42nd MLS career goal for the New England Revolution which moved him into sole position of 8th on the team’s all-time scoring list. For Carles Gil, the assist was his 50th MLS assist. He is now the 5th fastest player in MLS history to reach 50 assists and moves to T-2nd all-time in the team’s all-time assists list.

In the 72nd minute, the Revolution had to call on their goalkeeper Đorđe Petrović.

D.C. United’s #11 Taxi Fountas took the ball past Revolution defender Dave Romney and took a low driven shot in the bottom right corner which was deflected out for a corner by Revolution goalkeeper Đorđe Petrović.

Just 2 minutes later, In the 74th minute, D.C. United continued their attack as #2o Christian Benteke combined once more with #11 Taxi Fountas who took a left-footed shot outside the area which was saved once more by Petrović.

Entering the 78th minute, Bruce Arena made his 3rd change of the match by substituting midfielder Jack Panayotou for midfielder Emmanuel Boateng.

9 minutes later, in the 87th minute, Bruce Arena made his 4th and final change of the match by substituting DP forward Gustavo Bou for DP forward Giacomo Vrioni.

Following the substitution, the Revolution struck once again.

In the 88th minute, The Revolution had a corner kick on the left side of the field. Carles Gil’s out swinging left-footed delivery entered the middle of the box and was deflected to the top right of the box. 17-year-old Revolution midfielder Noel Buck then took a one-time right-footed shot which deflected off of #3 Derrick Williams and went past D.C. United goalkeeper #1 Tyler Miller for the 2-1 lead.

The game was not over yet after the spectacular finish by Buck…

Entering the 90th minute, DC United had a corner kick on the left side of the field. The ball was sent in by #43 Mateusz Klich and won by #15 Steven Birnbaum. His downward header was met by a diving #20 Christian Benteke whose effort was saved off the line by Revolution defender DeJuan Jones. The ball then continued to bounce around the box as it was headed once more by #3 Derrick Williams. His effort was blocked by Henry Kessler. His block on the ball managed to send the ball out to midfielder Carles Gil who then cleared the ball out to midfield.

Just 1 minute later, DC with another corner kick sent it into the box where it once again found #20 Christian Benteke whose headed effort was saved by a diving Đorđe Petrović.

After the 3 minutes of added time, the center referee blew for the final whistle, as the New England Revolution came from behind to win 2-1.

This victory solidified the New England Revolution into first place in the Eastern Conference with a 4-1-0 record and a +2-goal differential.

In regard to historic marks, Revolution center back Omar Gonzalez still remains 17 minutes away from surpassing the 22,000 minutes milestone.

The New England Revolution (4-0-1, 12 pts.) return to Foxborough to face New York City FC (2-1-2, 7 pts.) at Gillette Stadium on Saturday, March 31. The match kicks off at 7:30 p.m. ET on MLS Season Pass on the Apple TV app.
