Olympique Lyonnais and Chelsea FC opened the Women’s International Championship Cup at Providence Park in Portland, OR, on August 17, 2022. A thrilling match where the women of Chealsea FC fell after a second half come back from Lyon, led by ex-Thorns playmaker Lindsey Horan’s excellent free kick in minute 76. Chelsea got on the score board earlier on in the 8th minute, a precise long ball by Erin Cuthbert, found forward Sam Kerr who clearly beat Lyon’s defense to control the ball and skillfully chip over Lyon keeper Christiane Endler.

The second half saw Chealsea expand their advantage with again the Australian international and golden boot winner, Sam Kerr, assisting Lauren James just 5 minutes from the re-start in minute 50. Lyon would rally with another gem, a lovely free kick by Lindsey Horan, that gave Olympique Lyonnais wings to attempt the come back. Danish international forward, Signe Bruun, would find that second goal picking up a loose ball in the box in minute 88.

The penalties would see the quality of world class keeper Christiane Endler give Lyon that extra edge to get them to the first spot for final this Saturday, August 20. Olympic Lyonnais played the final of the Women’s International Championship Cup against the Portland Thorns last year, this time, they will meet a surprising CF Monterrey who upset the local Portland Thorns, also from the penalty spot, after a 1-1 draw.
