Whitecaps Take Canadian Championship on Penalties

Vancouver Whitecaps 1-1 Toronto FC (Vancouver win 5-3 on penalties)

VANCOUVER, BC–For the first time since 2015, Vancouver Whitecaps are Canadian Champions after defeating Toronto FC on penalties before 24,307 at BC Place. With the win, Vancouver earn a spot int the fifth round of the 2023 Concacaf Champions League.

Brian White opened the scoring in the 20th minute heading in a cross from Ryan Gauld to put the Caps ahead. The lead held until the 75th minute when Lukas MacNaughton headed in Federico Bernadeschi’s cross to level matters at one. Bernadeschi and Lorenzo Insigne both started for Toronto FC with the former playing all 90 minutes while the latter played 88.

It went straight to penalties after 90 minutes and the only miss from spot kicks would come from Jonathan Osorio who struck the post in the third round. Vancouver went five-for-five and Tristan Blackmon put in the deciding penalty.
