A valuable win that solidifies the Portland Timbers in the playoff places moving up to fifth-place and their third consecutive win on the road. Somehow, the Timbers are seeing a revival in their game and coming with a lot of positive results on their long road stand.
The win comes thanks to a second-half own goals from Whitecaps center back Ranko Veselinovic in the 66th minute. As Blanco crossed the ball to a wide-open Felipe Mora, the Chilean sent a shoot that meet the feet of the Serbian, that scored the game’s lone goal. In addition of Steve Clark, the Timbers defensive backfield stood their ground despite the Caps’ reaction in its attack.
With the Caps interim manager Vanni Sartini looking to see a continuance of his side winning streak, he started making several moves to add some dynamism to his attack and at least rescue a point.
The moves didn’t faze the Timbers, despite the pressure put on by the hosts, especially with a 76th minute shot from Deiber Caicedo that was met by an opportune Claudio Bravo standing on the line. It was a duel of goalkeepers as both Maxime Crepeau and Steve Clark had their moments and delivering opportune game-defying saves.
In the end, Steve Clark came away with his third consecutive clean sheet and made two amazing saves in the match and ending road trip that concluded with one loss, one draw, and three big wins for the Portland Timbers.
This win puts Portland in fifth place with 33 points and currently in first place in the Cascadia Cup standings with two wins and one loss and a game pending against the Vancouver Whitecaps on October 20th.
