Red Stars Breeze By Kansas City

BRIDGEVIEW, IL—The Chicago Red Stars ended their three-match winless streak in the NWSL with a 3-0 thumping of Kansas City at SeatGeek Stadium. The win puts the Red Stars third in the table pending Sunday’s action.

The Red Stars first broke through in the 35th minute as Sarah Woldmoe headed in Mallory Pugh’s corner. In the 62nd minute, it was Woldmoe again. This time a Pugh free kick went off a defender and right at the feet of Woldmoe who scored from point-blank range. It was the first brace by an actual Red Stars player this season (as “own goal” had done so twice).

Katie Johnson completed the scoring in the 81st minute heading in a cross from Kealia Watt.

Kansas City keeper Adriana Franch made her 300th career save in the match—four on the night—but outside of that, there was little to celebrate for the visitors as they remain rooted to the bottom of the league.

“It always feels good to get a good win and it always feels good to get a clean sheet. Just to see somethings that we have been working on actually play out in the game,” said Sarah Woldmoe. “The forward movement was really good today.”

The Red Stars go on the road for the next couple weeks starting with a trip to Gotham FC next Saturday. Kickoff is at 6pm CT on Paramount+.
