Inter Miami hasn’t even kicked a ball yet and they may already be making waves.
The Major League Soccer expansion side, who will start play in 2020, have been hinting all summer at making a major coaching announcement. They may have found their man in Phil Neville.
Prost Soccer has learned through multiple sources that the club is considering Neville to be their first-ever manager.
Neville is currently the head coach of the English Women’s National Team, a position that he has held for the past three years.
His side made their second consecutive appearance in the semifinals of the World Cup this past summer. He is also slated to become the manager of Great Britain’s women’s side at next years Olympics in Tokyo. His current contract with the English Football Association runs through the 2021 European Championship.
Prior to his work with the England National Team Neville was an assistant coach with Salford City and Valencia. As a player, Neville was a fixture for both Manchester United and Everton, making 505 appearances in the Premier League, often playing alongside Beckham.
While his knowledge of MLS may be minimal, this might not be as big a drawback as it seems.
Coaches such as Tata Martino (formerly of Atlanta United FC), Matias Almeyda (San Jose Earthquakes), and Patrick Vieira (formerly of New York City FC) have all proven themselves to be quick learners of the nuances of the league and used their experience to have immediate success.
