Bundesliga Matchday 7 Review: Bayern’s banana peel

Bayern slide continues, Paco scoring means BVB wins, and our first coach casualty of the season. This and more from the Bundesliga.

As Oktoberfest in Munich comes to a close, Bayern find themselves in a position not seen since 2010-11 after their 3-0 loss to Borussia Monchengladbach–6th place. Now that season finishing in 3rd to Dortmund’s Jurgen Klopp was no accident and following a title and Champions League runner-up position was difficult, but the drop was considerable. Though this is totally a different Bayern and a different Bundesliga.

After a disappointing 1-1 draw in the Champions League, Niko Kovac rolled the team out in a 4-3-3 and yet it was a pair of counter attacks that found the Foals 2-0 up before the 20th minute. It was a match of Bayern chasing and before the end, BMG added a third. Their ability to convert their chances is usually something Munich does. Now they were on the other end of it.

Borussia Dortmund was looking to maintain their lead on Bayern in the table and yet they were able to again pull off the comeback as Paco Alcacar scored a hat trick in BVB’s 4-3 win.

FC Augsburg is always a tricky team and Borussia found that out after FCA got the early goal. After Alcacar was brought on in the 59th minute, everything turned on a dime. An equalizer by Paco in the 62nd minute was followed by another lead for Augsburg in the 71st. The on-loan striker from Barcelona equalized followed by a goal from Mario Gotze in the 80th and 84th minutes. Augsburg equalized in the 87th only for Paco Alcacar to get the winner in the sixth minute of stoppage time for a dramatic victory.

Hoffenheim was looking to return to the top end of the table after their loss in the Champions League, but a resurgent Eintracht Frankfurt had other ideas as they took home the three points 2-1.

Eintracht took the lead right before the half with Ante Rebic scoring the goal lobbing the keeper to give momentum to the Eagles. Exiting the half, Luka Jovic doubled the lead with his second in as many matches. Hoffenheim could only pull back one goal after Rebic was sent off on a second yellow in the 64th minute. Frankfurt move to seventh in the table with their fourth victory in five in all competitions after the slow start.

Elsewhere in the Bundesliga

RB Leipzig put six goals in against Nurnberg to go second in the table. Nurnberg has now conceded a league-high 16 goals this season despite being in a three-team tie for 10th.

VfB Stuttgart, after spending big in the summer, were the first to fire their coach in Tayfun Korkut. Five points after seven and out of the Pokal was too much and now after a shock 3-1 loss to bottom Hannover, the Swabians are bottom of the Bundesliga. American Bobby Wood scored two for 96ers.

Werder Bremen solidified their efforts for qualification for Europe with a 2-0 over Wolfsburg and are now part of a four-way tie for second a point above Bayern.

Schalke moved further up the table after their poor start with a 2-0 victory over Dusseldorf. Weston McKennie scored his second goal in as many matches for the Royal Blues.

Leverkusen looked a little punch drunk after falling to pieces versus BVB a week before as they played to a 0-0 draw against SC Freiburg.

Mainz played Hertha to a 0-0 draw. The 05ers will feel gratification from this as Berlin had been flying high this season.
