Sporting KC Monday Musings

Welcome to the Sporting KC Monday Musings, a look at Sporting Kansas City and its affiliates and academy with news and opinions on the going’s on in Kansas City soccer scene.

Sporting KC 2 Montreal Impact 2

I stressed Friday that points would be needed from a visit North of the Boarder when there was an Open Cup road match mid week. To prove that the victory over FC Dallas was not down to the referee making some cataclysmic errors.

Dom Dwyer showed up with a brace of goals to place him second all time for Sporting KC. His career totals are nine goals in five matches against the Francophone club.

Thing was, as a squad, they responded to each and every goal that the Impact scored with a goal of their own.

Taking part in each of the Sporting Kansas City goals was Benny Feilhaber.

To say that 2016 has been a let down for the 2015 Best XI member would be an understatement.

Has not helped that there has been an ongoing contract discussion.

Currently Benny Feilhaber is looking at being out of contract after his best season as a professional.

Should things persist going forward the Sporting administration the new free agency model to take him away.

Two league wins and three in all competitions is a sign that things are progressing. Matt Besler and Graham Zusi will be returning from international duty to bring the squad to full strength.

Sporting Blue Man of the Match: Benny Feilhaber looked his old self and that means more going forward than two goals from Dom Dwyer.

Open Cup Fifth Round Wednesday

Houston Dynamo was able to beat USL side San Antonio at home and host the holders Sporting Kansas City Wednesday.

Question is which Dynamo side shows up. The one that defeated San Antonio 4-0 or the side that gave up three unanswered to Portland at the weekend.

Last year Sporting was able to in 3-1 at home and have never fallen in the Cup to Houston.

Peter Vermes will look to field his usual strong line-up and sub using the reserves to give match time.

Could see Ever Alvarado also making his debut, something to look for.

Ever Alvarado Joins Sporting Kansas City

Signing on Friday on a free transfer the Honduran international will be a useful player come the CONCACAF Champions League and MLS play.

Admittedly not what is needed in terms of priority this could certainly be the kind of upgrade at left back on the cheap which is only a plus going forward.

Jordi Quintilla Waived

After scoring the winning penalty kick in the 2015 US Open Cup final Quintilla found playing time difficult. Vermes loaned him to Swope Park Rangers earlier this season after losing his place to Benny Feilhaber.

Quintilla had some difficulty with the physicality of MLS. But In my view that’s not why he leaves after 15 total appearances.

The deadline for contract guarantees is looming at the end of the month. Sure another international spot was opened for Alvarado to take but this screams roster management.

Swope Park 2 Seattle Sounders 2 0

It has been a while coming but the Swope Park Rangers came away from Seattle with a win. Funny how the Rangers managed to do this and Sporting Kansas City has not.

The first road win since the beginning of April, the Rangers found the back of the net in goals from Kris Tyrpak and Mark Anthony Gonzalez.

It seems that there is a second half turnaround in progress from the Rangers.

With a home match against Saint Louis at Children’s Mercy Park on the weekend things are looking good for the USL side.
