The road? Where the Portland Thorns are going they don’t care about the road.
On Friday night the Thorns traveled across the United States and not only secured three valuable points but set the tone for the rest of the NWSL. Thanks to two goals in the second half the Thorns dispatched the Western New York Flash 2-0 at Sahlen’s Stadium in Rochester, New York.
Christine Sinclair led the charge for the Thorns, hitting a winding shot past Flash goalkeeper Britt Eckerstrom in 48th minute. The Canadian international has scored two goals in consecutive matches for the Thorns. In addition, Friday’s strike gave her six game-winning goals for the club the most in team history.
The Thorns would add a second goal in the 72nd minute off of a penalty kick taken by Nadia Nadim. Midfielder Tobin Heath, who had been pressing the Flash defense for a second goal, was taken down in the box by Flash defender Elizabeth Eddy. The goal was Nadim’s second for the Thorns this season.
Despite entering the match having scored ten goals in their past three matches the Flash found themselves a bit unlucky against Portland. Midfielder Samanatha Mewis came closest in the 22nd minute with a blistering shot that appeared destined for the top of the goal only to hit the crossbar. Another attempt by Mewis in injury would also hit the post, denying the Flash the chance to make things interesting late.
For the Flash this is their first loss in four matches, ending a promising run by the fledgling side. The club will look to start a new winning streak next week when they host the Boston Breakers (6/24, 7pm EST).
Meanwhile for the Thorns their victory against the Flash adds to their already impressive undefeated record. Their form will be tested though this week as they will host the Chicago Red Stars on Wednesday night (10PM EST) then travel to take on the Pride (6/26 5pm EST).
