Club America new Liga MX king

SEATTLE —  Head coach Sigi Schmid and midfielder/defender Brad Evans met with media members to address tomorrow’s CONCACAF Champions League matchup against Liga MX side Club America.

In the video below, the duo provided their thoughts on what the Sounders must accomplish in the home leg of their two-match total goals clash.

1. Keep Club America off the scoreboard

Both Schmid and Evans agreed the most important outcome would be a clean sheet heading back to Mexico City for the second leg on March 2.

If the Sounders manage to hold Club America scoreless at home, it forces them to open up their offense. Seattle then has the potential of countering on the attack for an all-important away goal.

2. Use the home fans to gain an edge

The Sounders will unveil their new artificial turf on Tuesday night. Schmidt was asked about this edge, and he responded by pointing out the home fans were more important.

According to the veteran manager, utilizing the supporters and the CenturyLink atmosphere would be more beneficial than the newly installed turf.

3. Be smart and don’t panic

Evans, the Seattle captain, noted the Sounders didn’t need to score in the first 15 minutes of the game. He felt the outcome would hinge on maintaining possession and not panicking if the match was scoreless.

With Jordan Morris’ speed up front and defender Tyrone Mears’ crossing ability, the home team has a couple of weapons to pressure Club America’s defenders.
